A driver who blatantly struck down a pedestrian on the Don Robin Public road, East Coast Berbice and fled the scene with his car has been nabbed. The driver Cleveland Pollard 33, who gave his address as 31 Norton Street, Wortmanville,
Georgetown was taken to court on Friday before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s court where three charges were instituted against him.
He was charged with-dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance after an accident.
According to information on Saturday 24th May at Don Robin Farm, pedestrian Ramdat Basdeo called ‘Naresh’ 30, an operator was walking out with his family on the village public road, not far from his home. Around 18:30 hours he was struck down by a fast moving car which failed to stop and drove away from the scene.
Basdeo suffered a broken foot as a result of the impact. He was picked up and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital, from where he was transferred to the Georgetown Hospital. He underwent surgery at the GPHC.
The impact of the accident caused the rear view mirror of the car to break off. It was retrieved with the number PRR 8081. The driver was later tracked down and arrested. He subsequently admitted to the crime. He was released on station bail.
In court on Friday Pollard pleaded guilty to all three charges, and will have to return to court for continuation.
According to Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, on the day in question the man drove motor car PRR 8081 in a manner dangerous to the public thus causing injuries to Basdeo. He was placed on $30,000 bail on that charge. He is also charged with, on the same day in question, he failed to stop after the accident contrary to section 62(C) of the Road Traffic act.
The other charge read that on the day in question, after being involving in an accident whereby injuries were caused to Basdeo, he failed to render assistance to the injured man. He was placed on $10,000 bail each on the latter two charges.
