The Guyana National Bureau of Standards (GNBS) as the National Standards Body has been helping to protect the environment through the development of national standards.
There could be the introduction of interim guidelines for industrial effluent discharge into the environment, and the labelling of equipment, items and parts containing refrigerants, according to Public Relations Officer, Lloyd David.
World Environment Day (WED) activities take place all year round and climax on June 5 every year, involving everyone from everywhere. This year’s theme for WED focuses on the impact of climate change on Small Island Developing States.
David explained that the Bureau has also developed the capacity to work with local companies to implement an Environmental Management Systems (EMS) meeting the requirements of the ISO 14001 Standard EMS – Requirements with guidance for use. With an implemented EMS, companies too can demonstrate care for the environment.
“As we commemorate World Environmental Day 2014, the GNBS would like to use this opportunity to raise its voice to remind every stakeholder and every citizen of Guyana that we all have a role to play in protecting and preserving our environment for ourselves and for future generations,” David said.
It was further noted that the Environmental Management Systems (EMS) is an explicit set of arrangements and processes designed to manage environmental issues in an industry or company without adversely affecting its performance, goals and objectives.
David noted that the presence of an Environmental Management System helps a company to protect itself from legal liabilities and ensures compliance with complex (and often ambiguous) rules. It also ensures that environmental impacts are reduced due to careful management of environmental requirements throughout the company.
“This means improved environmental performance, and ensuring the competitive edge in a world where environmental protection is essential…No doubt, Guyana has been in the forefront of the fight to save the environment through the implementation of the Low Carbon Development Strategy,” David underscored.
According to the United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP), World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event that is aimed at being the largest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action.
Through World Environment Day, the United Nations Environment Programme is able to personalize environmental issues and enable everyone to realize not only their responsibility, but also their power to become agents for change in support of sustainable and equitable development.
