Farmers who have been cultivating rice mostly within the high lands on the Essequibo Coast are being affected by the inability to readily access water from the main pump at Capoey.
“The TIPS (Tapacuma Irrigation Project) project is not working as it should,” lamented one farmer.
The situation, farmers say they are faced with, is grave since they are currently being forced to purchase water at a high cost of $6000 per acre to sustain their crops.
And, despite this current constraint, farmers say that they are still required to pay rental for water and their land.
Farmers are contending that the Tips project (the Dawa pump), which lacks proper supervision was constructed to supply rice farmers with water but that project has been rendered inefficient.
The irate farmers further contended that the Drainage and Irrigation Department, in the Region lacks human resources (understaffed) which puts a strain on its efficiency.
Cultivation of the autumn crop has commenced. Some 32,000 acres of land is under cultivation.
Rice farming is one of the main economic activities in the Region.
