Dubs programme a refreshing change to local television programmes
The producers have dubbed it ‘Maximum Sports’ and viewers would have nodded in affirmation after deriving maximum satisfaction following the inaugural presentation of the one hour television show on National Communication Network (NCN), Friday May 30 last.
Indeed, the programme dealt with a wide variety of combat sports and the
producer/presenter, Max Massiah, surprised his audience when he joined with popular television personality, Mark Watson and linked up with World Boxing Council (WBC) world rated pugilist, Clive Atwell, in a soul searching interview that represented the only time Atwell officially spoke with the media since the culmination of his bout with Johnny Gonsalves for the latter’s WBC featherweight crown.
Intent on fulfilling a mandate to present one of the best local television sports shows, Mr. Massiah paid a visit to the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Frank Anthony yesterday morning, where he discussed strategies towards the development of local sports even as he sought an input from the government official. Mr. Massiah was also accompanied by former Continental of Americas champion, now journalist, Michael Benjamin who will be tasked with technical input in boxing and other disciplines.
The gentlemen discussed a wide range of issues and Mr. Anthony said that he was impressed with the projections. The Minister further highlighted areas of concern that he feels are in need of attention and beseeched Mr. Massiah to place some amount of emphasis in those areas. He urged Mr. Massiah to adapt a different slant to the dispensation of knowledge even as he attempts to create interest in local athletes and their achievements.
“To my mind, our local presenters ought to focus on the strategic aspect of the various disciplines while aspiring to widen the knowledge base of viewers on the intricacies of sports,” he posited. Minster Anthony further said that his Ministry has prepared pictorial sports material that underlines the importance of exercise and sports as the catalyst to healthy living. Subsequently, he allowed Mr. Massiah to have a sneak preview of some of the material which aspired to focus on the technical modalities of boxing and other combat disciplines.
Mr. Anthony promised to make the material available even as he urged the general public to visit the archives on Homestretch Avenue and take advantage of the wide range of sports data available there.
He also echoed a previous call for citizens to get involved in exercise programmes to reduce the high incidences of non-chronic diseases and obesity.
Mr. Massiah was indeed grateful for the assistance and advice received, especially in the acquisition of meaningful sports footage. Subsequently he expressed gratitude to Mr. Anthony while presenting him with a T shirt with the emblem of the programme. The two gentlemen has since committed to a collaboration of efforts towards the success of the venture.
‘Max’, as he is familiarly called, holds a certificate in television production from the University of Guyana Centre of Communication in collaboration with the Ohio University and the American Council on Education. He is also a former martial arts practitioner and a certified boxing coach.
Maximum Sports will next be aired on NCN 11 Friday June 6 from 21:00hrs and every Friday thereon. Interested sponsors are asked to contact Max at tel # 609-8132 or 672-8569.
