According to President of the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation (GABF), Nigel Hinds, GABF received correspondence on Tuesday from the Office of the President that GY$2 Million will be made available to the GABF to support Guyana’s participation in the Caribbean Basketball Confederation 2014 Championships scheduled for Tortola, BVI from July 1-12, 2014.
Hinds said it was a timely donation by the Government of Guyana and expressed gratitude and appreciation on behalf of the GABF for the commitment shown by the government to Basketball in Guyana.
“We do hope that the endorsement by the Government of Guyana to support basketball development in Guyana will encourage Guyana’s corporate community to respond positively to the ongoing fund raising efforts of the GABF as the Federation prepares the Guyana Teams for the 2014 Caribbean Basketball Championships,” Hinds said.
“The GABF is very thankful for the financial support from the Guyana Government and we intend to honour the Government’s confidence shown in the GABF by working diligently to firstly ensure that Guyana’s Men and Women Teams are well represented at the CBC 2014 Championships and secondly to continue in our efforts to promote and develop basketball across Guyana,” Hinds, a former National Basketballer, added.
Meanwhile, the Guyana Men’s team will be picked based on accomplishments and talent while the overseas based Guyanese, who will join the local players, make Guyana as a major contender to win the CBC Championships this year.
The first Guyanese born NBA player, 32-year-old Rawle Marshall has committed to being in Guyana on June 16. He currently plays professional basketball in Europe.
The other overseas based Guyanese who have committed to come to Guyana to join training sessions for the 35-man squad, which was released on Tuesday, include 21-year-old Tyler Persaud who is currently at Windsor University after being transferred from Glenville State, West Virginia. He is a 6ft 7 inch Power Forward.
His brother 19-year-old Damian Persaud is a 6ft 3 inch Guard and a graduate of the Kiski Prep School Saltsburg, Pennsylvania. The siblings are both scheduled to arrive in Guyana on Sunday June 8 and should have their first practice session on June 10 at the ‘Sports Hall’.
The 26-year-old Ray Victor arrives from the BVI on June 16 and Keron McKenzie, Andre De Florimonte and Steffon Farley are some of the other overseas players expected to vie for selection.
Most of the overseas based Guyanese play professional basketball and will be competing with Guyana’s local stars such as 6ft 5 inch Jermaine Slater, Akeem Kanhai and Dwayne Roberts for a place on the Guyana National Basketball team. The overseas players should all be in Guyana by June 24.
Mark Agard has been already appointed Head Coach with Darcel Harris as his assistant. A 24-member Women’s squad has also been shortlisted with Ann Gordon being appointed Head Coach and Brian Carter her assistant.
