After spending 12 days in custody on the allegations of a co-worker who implicated him in a drug related case, a dog handler attached to the Narcotics Branch, Criminal Investigation Department (CID) was yesterday taken before the city court to face a narcotic charge.
Jevon David, 28, of Brighton Village, Corentyne, Berbice is the third airport official to be charged in connection with the 2.234 kilograms of cocaine which was on May 23 unearthed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport in the vent of the luggage hold of an outgoing Caribbean Airlines aircraft destined for the Canada.
When the charge of was read to David, he pleaded not guilty and submitted a bail application through his lawyer Peter Hugh but the court presided over by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry ordered him held until tomorrow.
David’s case is being prosecuted by Special Prosecutor Oswald Massiah who did not reveal the details of the crime. He, however, offered objections to him being granted bail.
According to his attorney, David has been working at the airport for the past three years and was charged following the accusations of a co-worker. Hugh said that his client was held under close arrest for 12 days.
Hugh contended that the only “evidence” the Customs Anti Narcotics Unit (CANU) has against his client is the allegations made by Eyon Persaud (a loader previously charged).
His claims were met with arguments from CANU’s Prosecutor, who in his address, confirmed that the defendant was held under close arrest for that period but was not mistreated. Massiah claimed that he was not being confined to a room but held “openly” at High Park Timerhi.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the objections of the Prosecution and ordered David held.
The matter has been transferred to the Providence Magistrates’ Court where it will be called again before Magistrate Leron Daly on June for statements.
Last Tuesday, two airport loaders were accused of concealing the said cocaine in the vent of the luggage hold of an outgoing Caribbean Airlines Flight.
Eyon Persaud, 25, of Hyde Park, Timehri; and Alex Seymour, 20, of 58 Garnett Street, Newtown, were charged for drug trafficking. Both men pleaded not guilty and were remanded to prison.
On May 23, last, Caribbean Airlines Flight BW606 was on the ground loading passengers and cargo destined for Canada when Persaud was allegedly approached by the dog handler.
Massiah claimed that an arrangement was made between Persaud and Seymour to place two packets of cocaine within a garbage bin in the male incoming area washroom.
The package, according to CANU, would then be retrieved by the loaders.
The Prosecutor had explained that the packets were then retrieved and both men hid the items on themselves Persaud in his socks and Seymour in his crotch.
The men, he had said, then went to the aircraft and concealed their respective packages in a vent in the luggage holding compartment in the plane.
A CANU officer, acting on information received, went to the aircraft, conducted a search and discovered the two hidden packets.
