– warns consumer in light of promotions
In keeping with constant efforts to sensitize consumers to the dangers and prevalence of counterfeit commodities on the local market, officials of Ansa Mc Al Trading Limited, are alerting buyers that another batch of fake items has been uncovered.
Yesterday, Ansa Mc Al officials revealed that, Ariel Soap Powder, Lucozade Energy Drink, Always Maxi Pads and Pringles have been added to the list of counterfeited items.
Last month, Government Analyst Food and Drug Department (GA-FDD) issued an alert to warn consumers about a line of counterfeit beauty products that included Head and Shoulders Shampoo and Conditioner; Pantene Pro- V Shampoo and Conditioner, and Oil of Olay anti aging creams.
In its authenticated form the items are products of US Manufacturers, Gamble and Procter, for which Ansa Mc Al Trading Limited is an authorized distributor.
“We are alerting consumers to a number of counterfeit products, which were recently uncovered especially, in light of several ongoing promotions and competitions involving the very products…” Ansa Mc AL, Managing Director, Beverly Harper said during a press briefing convened at the Company’s Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara Headquarters yesterday.
Incidentally the occasion marked the first drawing of the Lucozade ‘Drive Your Dreams’ Promotion.
Sujit Narine of 79 Seaforth and Pike Streets, Campbellville Georgetown; Jonelle Waldron, of 75 Republic Drive, Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara; and Winston Vibert Crossman, of Critchlow Street, Tucville Housing Scheme, Georgetown were declared winners .
Their prizes included a 42-inch Plasma television and Lucozade Hampers.
“We have to alert costumers about parallel and counterfeit Ariel Soap Powder, Lucozade Energy Drinks and Pringles, because we don’t want consumers to be cheated out of their opportunity to participate and win,” Harper said.
“Consumers can check the labels… Ariel Soap Powder, the fake is labeled in Spanish. Instead of Always, the fake maxis are labeled Alwags, some are in green packets labeled Always but these are not authentic.
“They have some gel in them that we are not sure is safe to use, as a feminine product. The real Always is packaged in blue,” Harper said.
The Manager said that unauthorized Lucozade Energy drink is bigger in comparison with the original.
“The fake Lucozade is labeled to contain 318 milligrams of liquid while the original is just about 300 mls.
“We will continue work with the Government Analyst Food and Drug Department,(GA-FDD) and the Guyana Revenue Authority, (GRA) to find ways to counteract the problems as best as we could.
“It is a recurring problem. We have been doing our part by alerting consumers and bringing it to the attention of the authorities, whenever we uncover issues of counterfeit items.”
According to Ms Harper, the authorities have succeeded in removing a number of counterfeit items from the shelves of local retailers and wholesalers.
“We can only guarantee the authenticity of our items but we know that the GA-FDD and GRA are doing their best. The department has since seized and removed a number of fake products from several stores.”
Defaulters could attract a fine as little as $6,500 or as much as $65,000 or even prison time, for sale and deliberate exhibition of a known counterfeit product.
