New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS) became the second team to advance to the semifinal of the Patrick ‘Patto’ April under-17 Inter Secondary School Knockout Football Competition with a hard fought 3-2 victory over Tutorial Academy Secondary School (TASS) which is being played for schools in the New Amsterdam Canje District.
The game which was played on Tuesday at the Scott’s Church Ground, Philadelphia Street New Amsterdam saw both teams playing hard in the heated encounter in an effort to qualify as the game see sawed throughout.
It was TASS that went ahead when Jaleel Fraser scored in the 7th minute. They held that lead until the 20th minute when star player Jamal Butts blasted home the equalizer to send the teams to lemon time at 1-1.
On the resumption, TASS once again went ahead when Lomar Reid scored in the 37th minute for the 2-1 lead. The NAMS, now under pressure, were trying everything to get the equalizer and one such move led to the expulsion of Butts who was shown the red card for challenging the referee, after being shown the yellow card initially.
Under immense pressure the 10-man NAMS unit buckled down and decided to up their game. They were awarded a penalty in the 43rd minute and Raheem Damon made no mistake to pull the score to 2-2. The game continued to see saw with TASS applying the pressure and NAMS defending and counterattacking for all their worth. The NAMS team took full advantage of another penalty in the 57th minute which was scored by Godfrey Coward to give his team the 3-2 lead which they managed to hold on to until the final whistle.
The competition continues today with the two semifinals which will see Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) coming up against defending champions Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) at 15:00hrs to be followed by the clash between last year’s runner up Berbice High School (BHS) and NAMS at 16:30hrs.
