– other airlines to finalize packages out of Florida, Toronto, New York and London
Under the theme ‘Sound, Soul and Taste’ a special package is being offered for Jamaicans for the Guyana Festival which will feature art, craft, dance, drama, music and cuisine. This will be in collaboration with Fly Jamaica and will be advertised in that country.
“It will be a package specifically designed for Jamaicans welcoming them to Guyana to experience what we have on show,” Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali said. He added that packages will also be available and distributed in Barbados, Trinidad, Suriname, Jamaica, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Miami, Toronto and London.
This was disclosed at the Tourism Ministry’s Boardroom, South Road where several of the performers for the Night of Legends event were present yesterday. The event will feature 16 stage performances and a full line of activities to entertain patrons for the three night event.
The cultural extravaganza will be staged from August 8 to August 10, 2014 at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence.
The artistes who made an impact on Guyana’s music industry and will be performing at the event include Dave Martins, Aubrey Mann, Teddy Jones, Glen “Fluff” Miller, Hilton Hemmerding, Johnny Braff, Terry Gajraj, Mighty Rebel, and Devindra Pooran. There will also be a number of musicians who contributed. They will be making up the band to back the legends. They will be: Kernel Vieira, Phillip Nichols, Herby Marshall and George Reid amongst others.
“They are so many people out there that we have not forgotten, we will get around to you,” coordinator of the event Lennox Canterbury said.
Adding that on the night of the show entertainment on stage should last for approximately four hours, Canterbury said a pavilion will be made available for the general public to interact with the legends where they can meet and greet.
The event is set to promote art, craft, dance, drama, music and cuisine while thousands are expected to converge at the venue to indulge in the treats available and to delight in the cultural atmosphere. For the festival games, Lennox Cush will be the coordinator of the game segment which will include football and cricket.
Minister of Tourism Irfaan Ali said that for the very first time, the fusion of the six different cultures that make up the Guyanese tapestry will be brought together reflecting a true melting pot that reflects the Guyanese identity.
Guyana is known the world over for its warmth and the hospitality of its people and it is also recognised that the underlying beauty in the destination is reflected in the people and the depictions of their cultural differences.
“We are reconnecting the past with the present as we project the future. If we can’t celebrate our own then no one will celebrate them for us,” Ali said
He said while Saturday August 9 will be for the night of legends, the following day there will be a cook out which will attract a group of Guyanese out of Florida. In addition there will also be standup comedy and a “Next Generation” performance by younger artistes. The date will be announced next week.
For children, Minister Ali noted that there will be more than 12 different rides. Any child under the age of 12 will be admitted free. Adults can take advantage of the Guyana Festival passport costing US$15 or $3000. This will allow entry each night of the three-night event.
Minister Ali further noted that 20,000 festival passports will also be available and distributed in Barbados, Trinidad, Suriname, Jamaica, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Miami, Toronto, London and online at the festival website.
“Now the festival passport will have discount coupons, a raffle with the grand prize of a car. All of this is giving back to festival passport holders. It will also have inside, autographs of the legend so someone can keep it as a memorabilia. We are also launching a festival coin which is being made by Kings Jewelry,” Minister Ali explained.
He said that a special package will be offered to Jamaicans in collaboration with Fly Jamaica and other airlines to finalize packages out of Florida, Toronto, New York and London. “We want all of Guyana to rally around the festival; we want all of Guyana to feel the energy and to be a part of this historic, patriotic moment in celebrating who we are.”
