The Youth Basketball Guyana Regional Conference Tournament continued last Saturday with six games in the Georgetown & East Coast Conferences at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall and National under-19 player Jonathon Pooran, who scored 19 points and three assists, spurred University of Guyana (UG) 13 point win over President’s College (PC).
Marvin Durant netted 20 points to lead Bishops High School (BHS) to a comfortable 52-33 win against Charlestown Secondary in the keenly contested under-19 division.
The Regional Conference Tournament is the qualifying rounds for teams hoping to play in the National Schools Basketball Festival from July 6-13.
The Regionals’ and NSBF are sponsored by Digicel Guyana, Edward B. Beharry and Company Ltd and Banks DIH and Saturday’s action saw Marian Academy beating St Roses High in an under-14 match up, Plaisance Academy getting the better of Bishops High in an under-16 game.
In the under-19 division, UG, led by Pooran with a game-high 19 points and three assists, got past President’s College, who were spearheaded by Shakeel Garnett’s 14 points and five rebounds, in an exciting battle.
In the other under-19 games, BHS, powered by Durant’s impressive showing, trounced Charlestown Secondary, Marian Academy beat Brickdam Secondary in double overtime and St Roses defeated GTI.
A power outage at Government owned ‘Sports Hall’ just before to start of the Bishops High/Charlestown Secondary fixture delayed the nights event which was attended by a fair sized gathering of most students for the various schools.
Conference games will continue on Saturday June 7 at the same venue with another six games.
