The Hearts of Oak Masters Football Club (HOOMFC) continues to show that it is the leading organization in organizing football activities, more so youth and school activities in Berbice especially.
This time the top schools in the New Amsterdam/Canje catchment area will once again take to the football field in the second edition of the Patrick ‘Patto’ April Inter School U17 Knockout football competition which is expected to kick off tomorrow with one match at the Scott’s Church Ground, Princess Elizabeth Road New Amsterdam.
The competition which will be an 11 a side affair and will see six schools participating in the 60 minutes encounter which will be divided into two halves of 30 minutes each. The schools down to compete are – New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary School (NAMS), Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary School (CSS) and Canje Secondary School (CSS). The one week competition will see eight matches being played over four days.
Tomorrow’s game will see VESS taking on CSS in what is expected to be a close encounter.
Tuesday’s encounter pits NAMS against TASS in a game of two evenly match teams.
Wednesday is semifinal day with the winner of Monday’s match taking the field against BEI in the first match, while Tuesday’s victor will match skills against BHS in the second encounter.
Thursday will see the teams clashing in the final and the third place play off.
Starting time on all the days is 14:30 hrs.
The presentation ceremony will take place immediately after the completion of the final.
The top teams will be presented with trophies and other accolades, while there will also be prizes for the top individual performers including the most valuable player, best goalkeeper, best defender, the best midfielder and best striker.
All players participating in the competition must be full time students of the schools they are representing and must be born on or after the 1st January 1997. They must also have at a least an attendance of 80% for the current school year.
Four substitutes are allowed for each team. A player sent off after receiving two yellow cards will miss the next game, but any player receiving a straight red Card will be suspending from the rest of the competition. All teams are expected to be in uniform. Where not mentioned, all FIFA rules will be in effect.
Patrick April or ‘Patto’ as he was known, was a popular football player and butcher in Berbice and Guyana who went on to represent Berbice on a number of occasions at various levels of the game. He once formed a potent combination with the famous Humphrey, Alphonso, Fords, Inness’s and Samuels’s siblings among others that dominated the football arena.
BEI is the defending champion.
