Two miners accused of stealing two ounces of raw gold were on Wednesday placed on $300,000 bail each by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
Wesley Morrison, 42, of Belfield Housing Scheme and Royston Herod, of Two Friends Village, East Coast of Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the charge, which alleged that between April 28 and May 2, last, at Aranka, Backdam, Cuyuni River, they stole the raw gold valued $420,000, property of Ivor Wade.
Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru, objected to bail for both defendants on the grounds that there are likely to be charged with other offences and as such the men may be flight risks.
Mangru said that Morrison had fled the area, after committing the act, but was later apprehended.
The duo was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Rexford Jackson, who requested that both his clients be granted bail.
The lawyer said that both men were employed by the virtual complainant for a considerable time but have never encountered any such allegation. Morrison was employed as a General Manager while Herod was a miner.
The lawyer also noted that there were at least four other persons in the camp, at the time but that none of the other persons was questioned in regards to the alleged crime.
The Magistrate ordered that the men lodge their passports and report to the police until the completion of their trial. The case was transferred to Bartica Magistrate’s Court to be heard on June 12.
