They have travelled to several communities in their bid to take boxing to the people and just a few days ago, ventured into
Mahdia where residents were treated to one night of fistic fury. Now, the executives of the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), in their bid to broaden their horizons, are preparing to venture into Buxton ECD for another edition of ‘Nuff Cuff’ at the Buxton Community Centre Saturday March 31 next.
Fifteen fights are carded for the night and the special feature will see three boxers out of St. Lucia battling against their Guyanese counterparts. The last time Arthur Langelier travelled to Guyana, he engaged Dennis Thomas in what turned out to be a ding dong Middleweight clash. Thomas won the fight but since then the St. Lucian had cried foul and yearned for a return clash. The impending encounter should be a scorcher especially since Thomas is out to prove that the victory was no fluke.
Another St. Lucian, Ron Bastien , will also comprise a part of the St. Lucian squad. He will be fighting in the Welterweight division and has promised a better showing than his last bout in Guyana against Eon Bancroft. The promoters have not yet indicated who his opponent will be but hinted that Bancroft might be called upon to fill the spot.
Female pugilist, Theresa London, is also scheduled to be in action and she faces St. Lucian, Malanda St Clair. The two were scheduled to face off in St. Lucia March month end but London was forced out of the fight after losing by technical knockout in Chile.
St Clair had been primed up for the clash and was somewhat disappointed by the turn of events. London has now received the green light and the two boxers will clash in the Heavyweight division. Further, there will be 12 additional bouts among some of the nation’s top boxers.
Meanwhile, President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, expressed satisfaction at the
progress of the young boxers. He said that his team has been hard at work in a bid to improve the fortunes of the young boxers. The GBA President further explained that the ‘Nuff Cuff’ initiative is meant to strengthen the bond between his organization and the various communities while keeping the boxers productively engaged.
“GBA executives are also aspiring to showcase those boxers that are currently preparing for national duty at the Commonwealth and the Central American and Caribbean championships,” Ninvalle disclosed.
He said that the boxers would soon be encamped as preparations intensify. The admission price is set at $500 and Mr. Ninvalle indicated that all monies accrued from the event would go towards the preparation of the boxers for their international engagements.
