comfortable eight-wicket win over home team East Coast yesterday at the Enmore Community Centre ground in the opening round of the Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Under-17 Inter-Association 50-over competition.
Rutherford picked up 3-25 and got support from Renaldo Mohamed (3-22) to dismiss the host for 76 in 26.1 overs in the rain hit encounter which was reduced to a 30 over affair and then returned to hit six fours in an attractive 47 as the City side galloped to 78-2 in 13.3 overs.
Georgetown won the toss in cloudy conditions and invited East Coast to bat first on slow track and heavy outfield. They quickly lost Andy Dowlatram (2) with just three runs on the board and never recovered despite a fighting 33 from National Under-15 batman Bhaskar Yadram.
With a very strong wind blowing across the ground, East Coast lost their second wicket at 9-2 when Inter-County Under-19 player Ramnarine Chatura (8) was dismissed by Aviee Smith.
A small but noisy crowd watched as Vishwanauth Ramlakhan, also an Inter-County player, was bowled by Rutherford for six to leave the score on 39-3. The versatile Rutherford struck twice again in the space of three runs by getting rid of Afzal Rahoman (2) and Kader Amsterdam (3) to leave East Coast wobbling on the ropes on 51-5 after the 50 was posted the 16th over with dark ominous clouds floating over the Enmore sward.

When play eventually resumed at 13:55hrs with Yadram on 25, East Coast had to bat another 11 overs and the 14 year-old Yadram, who struggled with his fitness, played the anchor role with intelligent batting before he was ninth out.
National youth player Mohamed removed Rajpaul Gopaul and Akeem Hiles in the space of a run as the hosts had slumped to 70-8. When left-arm spinner Ashmead Nedd bowled Yadram and Shinrick DiSilva was LBW to Samuel McKenzie for five, two wickets had tumbled for no run; the City lads routing the homesters with 3.5 overs left in the innings.
Georgetown in their reply enjoyed glorious sunshine and lost Darshan Persaud (4), bowled by Yadram at 16-1 but opener Raymond Perez (13) took the score to 52 before Perez tried to hit a juicy full toss out of Enmore but succeeded in skiing a catch to the wicketkeeper, giving Amsterdam his only wicket.
But Rutherford stepped up a gear and delightfully whipped Gopaul through mid wicket for four and majestically square drove him to the point boundary next ball before finishing the contest in emphatic fashion with a thumping four off pacer DiSilva.
The East Bank vs West Demerara game at Wales was washed out.
