Eight days of competitive action eventually came to an end and several of the nation’s top racquet wielders triumphed in various categories when the finals of the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) Independence Table Tennis Tournament, staged in conjunction with the National Sports Commission, concluded at the National Gymnasium. Mandela Avenue, Saturday May 24 last.
Nigel Bryan defeated Shemar Britton in the 21 years and under open category to take the honours at 9-11, 12-10, 10-12, 13-11, 11-4, 11-6 (4-2). The third place position was jointly shared by Elishaba Johnson and Stephan Corlette.
In the semi-finals, Britton defeated Johnson 13-15, 11-7, 11-8, 11-8.13-11 (4-1) while Bryan defeated Corlette 11-8, 11-8, 11-5, 7-11, 11-7 (4-1). The quarter final matches were also competitive and Britton defeated Sheldon Atherly at 11-5, 11-3, and 11-5 (3-0) while Johnson defeated Kristoff Sukhoo at 11-7, 11-4, and 11-6 (3-0).
Bryan defeated Miguel Wong at 11-6, 11-7, and 11-5 (3-0) and Corlette defeated Akeicia Nedd 10-12, 11-8, 11-5, 11-8 (3-1). The details of the last 16 saw Britton defeating Sunil Logan 3-0 while Atherly defeated Dante DaSilva 3-0. Sukhoo then defeated Alec Hopkinson 3-1 while Kevon Corbin lost to Johnson 0-3. Kyle Edghill lost to Wong 2-3, Brandon Belle lost to Bryan1-3, Nedd defeated Jeremey Singh 3-1, and Ryan Narine lost to Corlette 0-3.
In the Boys’ Doubles finals Britton/Corbin defeated Johnson/Corlette at 5-11, 8-11, 11-7, 11-5, 11-6 (3-2) while the joint third place went to Sukhoo/Narine and Edghill/Singh. In the semi-finals, the pair of Johnson/Corlette defeated Sukhoo/Narine at 14-12, 11-4, 11-6 (3-0) while Britton/Corbin defeated Edghill/Singh at 11-4, 12-10, 11-8 (3-0).
The action in the quarter finals saw Corlette/Johnson defeating Tyriq Saunders/Nicholas Romain, (3-1) while Sheldon Atherly/Aaron Persaud lost to Sukhoo/Narine (1-3) moments before Britton/Corbin defeated Alec Hopkinson/Miguel Wong (3-2) and Niran Bissu/Terrence Rausch lost to Edghill/Singh (1-3).
The Junior Mixed Doubles finals saw Kyle and Chelsea Edghill teaming up to defeat Alec Hopkinson and Priscilla Greaves, 11-3, 11-7, 11-9 (3-0) while joint third place went to Corlette/Selenas and Jackman and Britton /Nevaeh Clarkston.
In the semi finals, the two Edghills teamed up once again to defeat Britton/Clarkston 3-2 while the Hopkinson/Jackman team defeated Corlette/Jackman 3-2.
In the quarter finals, Hopkinson teamed up with Greaves and defeated Kevon Corbin and Jamaali Homer 3-2 while Corlette / Jackman defeated Elishaba Johnson/Kristie Lopes 3-1. Britton/ Clarkston then joined and defeated Terrance Rausch and Simran Bissu 3-0 but Khalil Ninvalle and Brittany Bunbury lost to the Edghill duo, 3-0.
In the women’s singles finals, Chelsea Edghill defeated Akeicia Nedd 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 (3-0) while joint 3rd place went to Jamaali Homer and Priscilla Greaves.
In semi finals action, Edghill defeated Homer at 11-6, 11-9, 11-4 (3-0) while Nedd defeated Greaves, 12-10, 11-1, 11-6 (3-0). The quarter finals saw Edghill and Greaves being gifted a bye to the semi- finals while Selenas Jackman lost to Homer 2-3 and Nedd defeating Kristie Lopes 3-0.
In the Men’s singles finals, Shemar Britton forfeited against Brandon Belle after she sustained severe cramps. The latter player was duly crowned the men’s singles champion while joint third place went Orin Hickerson and Joel Alleyne.
Britton defeated Hickerson at 7-11, 6-11, 12-10, 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 14-12 (4-3) in the semi-final duel while Belle prevailed over Alleyne at 11-8, 12-14, 11-4, 11-5, 11-8 (4-1) in the quarter finals. Britton also defeated Corlette 11-7, 11-9, 11-13, 11-7 (3-1) while Ayube Khan lost to Hickerson 8-11, 10-12, 2-11 (0-3).
Belle defeated Xen Goliah at 11-5, 10-12, 11-8, and 11-8 (3-1) while Alleyne defeated Nigel Bryan at 10-12, 5-11, 11-5, 11-2, and 11-9 (3-1). The places in the last 16 was decided after Britton defeated Patrick Couchman at 11-5, 11-6, 11-6 ( 3-0), Corlette defeated Jonathan Sankar 11-7,5-11,4-11,11-5,11-7 (3-2), Kristoff Sukhoo lost to Khan 8-11, 11-13, 9-11 ( 0-3) and Khalil Ninvalle lost to Hickerson 3-11, 8-11, 10-12 (0-3).
Kyle Edghill lost to Belle 11-8, 11-13, 6-11, 11-7, 9-11 (2-3), Miguel Wong lost to Goliah 11-6, 8-11, 11-5, 8-11, 9-11 (2-3), Bryan defeated Elishaba Johnson 11-13, 11-8, 11-7, 11-5 ( 3-1) and Alleyne was gifted a walk over after Sandor Kanhai failed to turn up for her game.
