Dear Editor,
I note the advertisement from the Office of the Chancellor inviting Lawyers who wish to be appointed Senior Counsel to apply and I think that that is a wonderful first step in making the process somewhat transparent.
I also note the emphasis being placed on the intended applicants to have a reputation for honesty and integrity. This ought to be of utmost consideration as too many lawyers are viewed by the general public as being the most dishonest persons around.
Whilst this is a commendable step, I do think that the Chancellor should go one step further and see who are the cheats and dishonest lawyers amongst them. The Commissioner of the Inland Revenue has many times before complained about how lawyers do not pay their income taxes and are cheats.
Lawyers earning in excess of $10,000,000 per year have to pay VAT charges. No lawyer who has been in practice more than 15 years can say in all honesty that he is not earning more than $10,000,000 per year.
Therefore if a lawyer with more than 15 years practice is not paying VAT charges then it means one of two things: (1) Clients have no faith in that lawyer so that they are not going to that lawyer to retain him for his services or (2) that lawyer is earning more than $10,000,000.00 per year but is cheating the Inland Revenue.
In either case, that lawyer should be automatically disqualified from any consideration as he would not be known as a person of honesty and integrity. The tax man should issue a list of the names of all the lawyers who pay the VAT charges. Food for thought Mr. Chancellor.
