Police in ‘B’ Division are hunting for a Surinamese woman who allegedly abducted a 10-day-old baby boy from his mother last Saturday at the Port Mourant Market in Corentyne, Berbice.
The baby, who was not yet registered, was taken away by a woman who his parent can only identify as Bibi Khan from Nickerie, Suriname.
According to the baby’s mother, Sandra Vishwanauth, she met with the woman on May 16, last at the Skeldon Hospital where she delivered her baby.
“I was experiencing labour pains and this woman (Bibi Khan) come in and say that she looking for someone name Sandra. I didn’t say anything because my name is also Sandra, plus I was in pain so my relatives talked to her,” the grieving woman who resides at Number 60 Village with her husband and two children said.
She further related that the following day after she delivered her baby, the woman returned and asked to play with the child.
“Before she played with the baby, she said that she has to pay him and she put $5000 under his blanket and she lifted him. We were talking and I gave her my address and so. She spent like an hour and then she left,” the woman recalled.
“I didn’t see her back until last Friday when she come to my house. She come and play with the baby and she gave him another $5000, and she asked if she can buy stuff for him and I said no problem,” Vishwanauth said.
The woman reportedly returned to her home last Saturday and asked the mother to dress her baby and to also get ready to go out.
“She said that she was taking me to buy some stuff for the baby so I went. When we were in Skeldon she said she has to do some business and she went into a store and then she come out back and say that my baby brings luck to her because she got through with whatever she had to do, but when we went into the store back to talk to the owner, he said based on the camera, the woman walked into the store and walked out back,” the mother stressed.
She further posited that after leaving the store, the Surinamese woman told her that she has to buy something in a Chinese store but “like after she see the cameras she didn’t go but I didn’t really suspect anything. She told me she wants to eat fish and we went to the Port Mourant market.”
According to Vishwanauth, when they reached the market, the woman told her that it is not safe for the baby to go into the market and suggested that the child be left with her outside.
“I went in and buy the fish and when I come out back my baby and the woman had disappeared. I looked everywhere and asked everyone but couldn’t find them.” the mother lamented.
The family is asking anyone with information on the baby’s whereabouts is to contact the nearest police station.
