The hearings into the Walter Rodney Commission of Inquiry are expected to resume on Tuesday, at the Supreme Court Buildings on Avenue of the Republic. According to a public announcement by Secretary of the Commission, Attorney at Law Nicole Pierre, the hearings will run from May 27, to May 30. The sessions would continue from June 2 and run to June 6, 2014.
It was noted that original and follow up statements from interested parties will be accepted during the life of the commission. The commission would also be setting subsequent hearing dates to facilitate the attendance of witnesses.
All persons who wish to testify on the hearing dates are asked to submit statements of their intended testimony in writing to the commission. Persons who may need assistance in composing their witness statements could be assisted by the commission secretariat the notice detailed.
The three commissioners Sir Richard Cheltenham, Mrs. Jaqueline Samuels Brown QC and Mr. Seenath Jairam, were appointed to examine the facts and circumstances immediately prior, at the time of and subsequent to the death of Dr. Walter Rodney in order to determine who or what was responsible for the explosion that caused his death.
Secondly the commissioners have to determine the cause of the explosion in which Dr. Rodney died whether it was an act of terrorism and if so who were the perpetrators.
They also have to examine whether, Gregory Smith, had a role in the death of Rodney. If so, they would have to inquire who may have counseled, procured, aided and or abetted Smith, including facilitating his departure from Guyana after Rodney’s death.
In 1974 Rodney returned to Guyana from Tanzania. He was due to take up a position as a professor at the University of Guyana but the government prevented his appointment.
He became increasingly active in politics, founding the Working People’s Alliance, a party that provided the most effective and credible opposition to the PNC government. In 1979 he was arrested and charged with arson after two government offices were burned.
On June 13, 1980, Walter Rodney at the age of 38 was killed by a bomb in his car, a month after returning from the independence celebrations in Zimbabwe and during a period of intense political activism. He was survived by his wife, Pat, and three children.
