Two gunmen escaped with over $1M from the Lucky Dollar store located in Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, yesterday after locking workers and customers in a room.
The robbery occurred around 10:00 hrs. There were two customers and four workers, including the security guard, in the building.
According to one of the workers, she was attending to a customer when she was notified by her colleague to check on another customer who was interested in purchasing a recliner chair set.
“I went up to him and I noticed him from the day before (Friday). He came in and said he wanted to purchase the chair set. He was asking if we have another colour and I said no and he left and went away,” the worker said.
She added that when she approached him yesterday, he informed her that his aunt was coming to do the necessary transactions.
“I left him upstairs and I went back downstairs to deal with my customer. Couple minutes later another guy came in and he was checking out the music sets and he was behaving strange. He was walking around the store fast, fast, fast,” the staff noted.
Kaieteur News was further informed that the customer who was inquiring about the music set left and went to the back of the building.
“When he went to the back, the other guy who was upstairs came down with the sales representative and the security guard and they asked everybody to lie on floor. He had a gun in his hand,” the worker added.
She further posited that the second gunman took the cashier into a room and demanded that she give him the cash.
“When they got the cash they carry us in a room and lock us in and when we average that they left, we came out,” the worker said.
The young woman added that the gunmen were well aware of the building and the fact that there were no surveillance cameras there.
“He (gunman) tell the cashier not to press the buzzer (security alarm) so he was aware of everything,” the woman added.
Investigations are ongoing.
On January 25, last, a security guard was found dead at a Lucky Dollar branch in Rose Hall Town, Berbice after bandits gained entry into the building.
According to reports, the bandits entered the yard through the back gate of the compound and pounced on the unsuspecting security guard.
They bound and gagged him, and he reportedly died of suffocation. The robbers then gained entry to the building by breaking the concrete ventilator at the side of the structure.
