The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport in partnership with the Embassy of the Argentine Republic have brought to Guyana’s shores, the classical Argentine Guitarists, Jorge Palacios and Jorge Francisco Marti of the ‘Escordando Duo.’
Palacios was born 1979 in Argentina and he is a guitar professor. Marti was born in Uruguay and completed his undergraduate studies as a music professor as well.
The group was created in 2008 in the city of Neuquen, Argentina. The word Escordando comes from the Portuguese root “escordar” meaning to awaken or remember in Spanish. The group established itself in its homeland as a popular one and this year the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Argentine Republic through its department of Cultural Affairs invited the duo to participate in a musical world tour.
They have travelled to Asia (India and Thailand), the Middle East and they are now in Caribbean (Guyana).
The duo devotes its musical activity towards passing on the beauty and intricate tones of the beautiful music of guitar. Their music is said to be inspired by Argentina’s folklore and love for tango. Their programme aims at unifying the purpose of the concert and that is; to highlight the authentic aspects of argentine folklore, capturing the essence of the popular rhythms and its harmonies and melodies through a more classical approach. The goal the duo says is to honour the guitar, which is the country’s musical instrument for excellence and to share that experience and appreciation with the world.
From today to June 4, the group will be performing at a number of functions. Some of the activities include live performances at the Caribbean Development Bank’s Cultural Evening at the National Cultural Centre on May 28 and the 204th anniversary of the May 1810 Revolution Reception hosted by the Embassy.
The duo will also be performing at the New Amsterdam Multilateral School in Region Six on May 27, and then at the McKenzie High School Auditorium in Region Ten on June 2, 2014.
‘An Evening of Guitar Music from Argentina’, with also be hosted by the Embassy of Argentina, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and The Theatre Guild of Guyana, starting at 7:00pm on Thursday, at the Theatre Guild, Kingston. This will be followed by a reception hosted by the Embassy.
The duo is also scheduled to perform at a music workshop being hosted by the University of Guyana’s 50th Anniversary Committee on May 31. These activities are specially tailored to promote cultural diversity in the area of music between Guyana and Argentina.
