A man who is well known to the authorities and was wanted by the police for a number of serious crimes in the New Amsterdam, Canje area, has been nabbed. One of the crimes was brutalising and robbing an 84-year-old pensioner
The man, Rawle Victor, called ‘Ralo’29, of Sheet Anchor Village, East Canje, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Reliance Magistrate’s Court on three charges –two for robbery under arms and one for robbery with aggravation. He has been remanded to jail on all the charges.
On Wednesday April 23, last, at St. John Street, New Amsterdam, while in company with others and armed with a gun, he robbed businessman Raymond Arnold, 60, of St. John Street, New Amsterdam, of $1M and his Toyota motor car PPP 9798.
Arnold operates the R. Arnold and Daughters Gas Station at Canefield, East Canje. His daughter, Diana Arnold, had collected him after closing his business and was headed home. As they approached their home around 19:20 hrs the car stopped just before the yard to allow the man to open the gate.
Around the same time they were accosted by three men one of whom pointed a gun at the young lady.
A scuffle ensued and the bandit managed to overpower the young lady, forced her over to the passenger side as he and his cohorts jumped into the car and drove away with the young lady and the $1M which was in a bag still in the car.
The young lady managed to open the door and jumped from the moving vehicle, injuring herself. She suffered a fracture to her back, and injuries to her knees and hand. The car later crashed and was found abandoned in Vryheid, West Canje. It was the fourth robbery he had suffered.
Victor was also charged with another million dollar robbery committed a few days later. The charge read that on April 28, in company with others and armed with dangerous weapons including guns, he robbed businessman Indernauth Bishram, called ‘Ajay’, 29, of Sun Shine Supermarket and Poultry Supply, of Public Road Cumberland, East Canje of $1,300,000.
Around 23:40 hrs that day, lorry driver/salesman, Rabindradatt Boundhan, had just parked motor lorry, GHH 4320, in front of the businessman’s premises. The driver left the vehicle to uplift a haversack containing the money which amounted to the day’s sales. The owner had come out to let him in when two masked men, one of whom was armed with a gun, came up from behind and held both of them at gun point.
Boundhan tossed the bag to Bishram in an attempt to evade the thieves, but the bandits held up both of them and took away the bag with the cash.
Victor is also charged with robbing an 84-year-old home alone pensioner. On May 12, last, in company with another he robbed 84-year-old John Rambarrat of $66,000 while using personal violence.
Around 14:45 hrs on the day in question, the elderly man was alone at home lying on his bed watching cricket when he was suddenly accosted by two identifiable unmasked men. The men armed with a piece of wood proceeded to kick, cuff and beat the elderly man as they demanded money and jewelry.
They proceeded to ransack the two-storied house before escaping with the money on two bicycles which were parked outside.
Victor was subsequently on the run, but was nabbed in a police operation. Victor was positively identified as he was well known in the area.
Prosecutor Sergeant Godfrey Playter, objected to bail, due to the nature, gravity and prevalence of the charges. He added that guns were used to commit some of the crimes. He also told the court that other matters of a similar nature are being investigated and more charges are likely.
Victor will have to return to court on the 4th June.
