Guyana is taking an aggressive posture to clamp down on smuggling, with two vessels seized during the first quarter.
According to a newsletter of the Task Force on Fuel Smuggling and Contraband, covering police seized the vessels with uncustomed goods in the North West District, Region One, during the first quarter of the year 2014.
The first seizure was made on January 25th at Port Kaituma where a boat containing general food stuff was seized by the police. It was handed over to the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA).
GRA issued fines of $4M.
According to the newsletter released yesterday, the second seizure was on February 21st when ranks at Morawhanna, Region One, seized a vessel with a quantity of uncustomed beers and water.
Again the matter was handed over to GRA and the operators of the vessels made to pay $60,000.
According to available records at the Task Force Secretariat, the number of interdictions by the Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID) of the GRA increased by 31% in the year 2013, when compared with 2012.
In 2012, ninety two interdictions were made while last year, 130 cases were conducted by the LEID of the GRA.
Forty-one of the interdictions for 2013 were for alcoholic beverages; 17 for smuggled chicken and a similar amount for motor vehicles.
Almost $70.4M in fines and taxes were collected by GRA as a result of those interdictions.
The Task Force also said that the heads of the five law enforcement agencies that makes up the body, significantly, reached an agreement that would allow for joint usage of the Police Floating Patrol Base.
The agencies include the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force, GRA, Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit and the Guyana Energy Agency.
With that agreement, joint patrols and operations would be mounted from the Police Floating Patrol Base.
The crack team is now set to meet with private sector organizations to develop better strategies to combating the smuggling of fuel and contraband.
Work is also being done to guide the implementation of the Immigration Regulations that were amended to declare Charity, Eteringbang, Parika and Ogle official Ports of Entry and the developing of standards to facilitate the safe transportation of bulk fuel on the roadways.
