Police and Prison officers were last night forced to quell a brawl at the New Amsterdam Prisons that ended with four inmates being badly chopped and doused with acid.
Sources identified the victims as Kawme Bhagwandin, Davindra Harrichand, called ‘Bara’; Adbussulum Azimulla, called ‘Sato’ and Clarence Williams, called ‘Dog Face.’ They were rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital but were subsequently transferred to Georgetown.
The victims are all on remand for serious offences ranging from armed robbery to murder.
Azimulla and Devendra ‘Bara’ Harrichand are on trial for the murder of Gary Simon, who was slain in December, 2004, at Nigg Village, Corentyne, Berbice.
Kaieteur News was told that the men were attacked by other inmates at around 18.00 hrs yesterday, after someone opened cell doors to let the attackers in.
They identified one of the attackers as Randolph Rodrigues, called ‘Shoulders,’ who is serving a 20 year sentence for murder.
It is unclear what triggered the dispute, but sources said that the dispute is between two rival prison gangs. One of the gangs is the notorious ‘Scare Dem Crew’ from Agnoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam.
There are reports that a cutlass and a corrosive substance were smuggled into the prisons recently.
