Melanie Damishana ‘A’ and Beterverwagting ‘B’ will contest the final of the East Coast Demerara segment of the Banks DIH-sponsored Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition after registering contrasting victories in their semi-final matchups on Wednesday evening at the Haslington Market Square.
In the first semi-final, Melanie ‘A’ who produced a terrific fight back in their quarter-final clash against BV ‘B’ to reach the last four made it to the championship game following two wonderful strikes from Jamal George, while in the second semi-final BV ‘B’ through a solitary goal from Erin Fraser hung on for the win against Melanie ‘B’.
Before another capacity crowd, the night which was interrupted by scattered showers saw some riveting encounters, but the highlight must be the quarter-final showdown that featured Melanie ‘A’ and BV ‘A’ which the former won 3-2 on penalty kicks after storming back from a 3-1 deficit with two minutes left in regulation time to draw the game and send it into a penalty shootout.
The architect of their recovery was the indomitable national striker Dwight Peters, who was clearly a cut above the rest of players.
He started off things with a thumping right-foot shot that eluded the defence in the 18th minute, before returning two minutes later to net the all important goal, this time firing a low left-footer into the goal, stunning their opponents and causing rapturous celebrations among their supporters.
The other highlight of the night was the exit of defending champions Plaisance whose lackluster form continued as they fell to BV ‘B’ 1-0 with Erin Fraser’s rasping right-footer untying the two combatants.
Last year’s beaten finalist Victoria Church Yard United prevailed 1-0 against Paradise, while in the other quarter-final, Melanie ‘B’ edged Victoria Eagles 1-0. The first and second place finishers will join the winners of the Georgetown and Linden Zones in the national playoffs which will be played shortly.
The winning team will receive $300,000, runners-up- $150,000, 3rd place- $100,000 and 4th place- $50,000. Meanwhile, the Organisers have confirmed that the date for the staging of the finals is Sunday and not Saturday as was previously announced.
