On Sunday afternoon last, Niall Roberts stepped on the block of lane 4 at the National Aquatic Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast, Demerara in the Boys 18 and Over 50m Butterfly and Freestyle.
Roberts was up against Joseph Seguina who is a very strong swimmer with powerful shoulders and strong legs that help him to keep up with the pace of Roberts. The whistle blew and they were both off to a flying start with all the spectators cheering on their athlete of choice.
Seguina was into his stroke like a bullet out of the barrel of a gun but Roberts was still under the water fluttering as Seguina headed for home but just before the 15 meter mark, Roberts’ head appeared and it was all over bar the shouting as Roberts moved a body length clear of Seguina which he increased with every stroke but Seguina would not give up as he tried very hard to close the gap to the line as Roberts touched in a time of 26.97, Seguina, two body lengths behind in 29.29.
In the Boys 18 and over 50m Freestyle, it was the same script as Roberts was the last to raise his head out of the water but came up ahead of Seguina and new boy Andrew Fowler who was very close behind, but Roberts soon put the race to bed as Seguina tried his utmost to close the gap but had Fowler to contend with as Roberts powered away to finish in a time of 25.53, Seguina in next in 27.66 and Fowler a close third, 28.09; long live the King!
