As the manhunt continues for the remaining bandit who escaped from the lock-ups at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court on Monday, the Guyana Police Force is warning persons against harbouring those who are fugitive from the law.
The warning comes in the wake of the recapture of Randolph Marks who was found under his mother’s bed in a house at Freeman Street, East La Penitence, less than a day after he and three other persons broke their way out of the lock-ups.
Kaieteur News understands that the police were tipped off about marks whereabouts and swooped down on the house at around 01:15 hours yesterday.
No other person from the house was arrested for harbouring the escapee since they reportedly cooperated with the police.
Police in a press release yesterday said that they are continuing in their efforts to recapture the remaining escapee, Keron Cummings of Sophia.
On Monday night another escapee Vickram Persaud was shot dead by police on the West Coast of Berbice as he was reportedly heading to neighbouring Suriname.
A police source said that ranks who were involved in the manhunt to recapture the escaped prisoners had received word that Persaud was seen in a car heading to Berbice.
They managed to locate the car and trailed it for a while. It is believed that Persaud observed that the car he was in was being followed and he realised that he was about to be recaptured.
According to a source, the fugitive must have asked the driver to stop the car, for when the vehicle came to a halt, Persaud emerged and fired a round at the chasing party.
However his bid for freedom was halt by two bullets, one to the abdomen and another to the head.
Police in a press statement had said that Vickram Persaud called ‘Lil John’, 28 years, of Doctor Dam, La Grange, WBD, was fatally shot during an armed confrontation with the police at Fort Wellington, WCB.
According to the police an unlicensed .38 revolver was recovered following the confrontation.
Earlier on Monday another escapee, Steve Richard Bacchus had his freedom cut short when he was dragged out of a minibus at Hadfield Street, Georgetown, minutes after the breakout, which occurred around 12:15 hours during a heavy downpour.
The prisoners escaped by ripping out the grill work and the mesh that covered the window at the back of the building to provide ventilation to prisoners in the holding cell.
They then proceeded to climb down the back wall and scale the fence, cutting a stand of razor wire at the top of the fence.
Meanwhile, things at the Georgetown Magistrate’s Court lock-ups returned to normal yesterday in the aftermath of the escape.
This was after contractors reinforced the grillwork that was damaged by the escaping prisoners.
A senior official at the Brickdam Police Station disclosed that had it not been for another prisoner who signaled the police that something was amiss, the situation could have been worse.
According to the official, 21 prisoners were brought from the camp street jail to attend court and they were all crammed into the court lock-ups which could hardly house 10 persons comfortably.
The officials said that while the men were making good their escape, one prisoner was vociferously demanding that he be taken out of the lock-ups.
“He was signaling to the ranks that something was going on because he kept making noise. His persistence forced the police to open the lock-ups and it was then that they noticed that the grillwork was removed,” the official stated.
An alarm was raised and immediately security measures were put in place to lockdown the facility to prevent any further escape.
