A teen mother was brutally murdered late Monday evening in Berbice by the 49-year-old father of her baby daughter
after she spurned him. The man subsequently ingested a poisonous substance and was up to press time in a critical condition at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
The depressed community of Angoy’s Avenue also called ‘Cow dam’, ‘Caracas’ and ‘High Dam’ was startled by a woman’s brood-curdling screams, and their curiosity led them to the home of 19-year-old Oneka Greaves, who had been stabbed multiple times by her four-month old baby’s father, Robert Stanley, of Mai Mai Dam, in the same area.
The man was reportedly upset that the young lady had told him that they should end the relationship and she wanted to move on with her life and he should do likewise.
After committing the act, Stanley reportedly went to the Central Police Station and told the ranks there that he had just injured his wife after they had a misunderstanding and he had consumed some poison.
He is now under police guard at the New Amsterdam Hospital where he is fighting for his life after reportedly drinking a dose of gramoxone.
According to the dead teen’s mother, Abiola Greaves, her daughter was in a relationship with the man since she was about 16 years old. The woman stated that she had spoken to her daughter on a number of occasions to end the relationship with the man, but she continued.
The older Greaves stated that the relationship was abusive and her daughter who gave birth to a baby girl, Omena Omeka Stanley, four months ago, finally decided that she would end the relationship with Stanley. He however continued to visit and insisted that they continue their association, but the woman was adamant that she wanted to move since the relationship was abusive and the man never used to give her anything.
According to the mother, her daughter hardly got any help from the man and on most occasions she had to take care of the child. Oneka, she said, in order to get out of the man’s clutches, decided to relocate to Georgetown. The baby was left in her mother’s care while she sought a living in the capital.
However Stanley was very upset and obsessed. He started to issue threats and demanded that she return. The man decided to hatch a new plot to woo the woman back to Berbice. He constantly telephoned her and told her that the child was sick and her family was not taking care of the baby and she should come and see what was going on.
Not suspecting anything sinister the young lady travelled to Berbice on Monday without her mother’s knowledge. Her mother stated that she was not at home but arrived around 19:00 hrs to see her daughter and Stanley in a conversation in the yard of their modest home. The woman stated that her daughter wanted nothing more to do with Stanley. He finally agreed and stated that he would try to take care of his child. He however told her that “if I can get her no man can get her”. He then told them he was leaving.
The woman stated that she and her daughter then went inside and Oneka, after feeding the baby, went to the standpipe at the back of the house to wash the feeding bottle. The woman said shortly after she heard her daughter screaming and staggered to the front of the house shouting “Abby, Abby, Oh God, ah gon dead, Stanley stab me,” before collapsing to the ground.
A friend, Ozelly Adams, who had arrived at the house moments before saw the man next to Oneka and when he saw her he asked her “wha you come hey fuh now.” Not realizing what the man was about to do, she ignored him and went into the house. It was only then that Mrs. Greaves realised that Stanley had not left the premises, but had been lurking in the yard.
Oneka Greaves was stabbed multiple times about her body. Her stepfather Deon Wilson and others rushed her to the hospital where she was taken for emergency surgery. She reportedly had over a dozen stab wounds about her body. Her sister Nicola Greaves who visited her in hospital stated that her sister was “badly damaged”.
Abiola Greaves told reporters that she remembers the man telling her that she and her granddaughter will have to live until death do them part. She did not take it for anything. The woman mentioned that the murder of her daughter brought back memories of her mother who was a police officer being brutally murdered about 18 years ago.
The man, who was previously married, is the father of four sons, ages 25, 23, 21, and 18. His wife had died under mysterious circumstances a few days after the birth of their last child.
