As army officials continue to investigate Sunday’s shooting of Lieutenant Othneil Hope and recruit, Vernon Harding, at Tacama, Berbice, army sources and relatives of the wounded recruit are alleging that both men were shot when Lieutenant Hope accidentally discharged
his firearm.
The shooting allegedly occurred around 14.30 hrs in a barrack room. Harding, who underwent surgery, was reportedly shot in the left side, while Lieutenant Hope was shot in the left leg. Up to late yesterday Harding was still in the Georgetown Public Hospital’s Recovery Room.
Harding’s wife, Tasleema Harding, said that her husband told her that Lieutenant Hope accidentally discharged his firearm and shot himself in the leg. According to Ms. Harding, the recruit said that he was going to the injured lieutenant’s aid when the officer accidentally discharged two more rounds, which struck the recruit.
His mother, Vanitta Harding, had said on Sunday that she overheard ranks at the GPHC saying that Lieutenant Hope was cleaning his firearm and accidentally shot himself and her son.
However, up to late yesterday, relatives said that they are still to receive an official comment on how he was shot.
Harding has a one-year-old daughter and reportedly enlisted in the army last month.
In a statement issued o Sunday, the GDF said that approximately 4:30 PM, two ranks stationed at the Colonel John Clarke Military School at Tacama were injured when two rounds were accidentally discharged from a firearm.
