The police in Berbice continue to make significant inroads in the notorious criminal enterprise by nabbing one of the most wanted men in Berbice, Vinood Gopaul. He was captured by Police around 18:00 hrs in a police operation in the Black Bush Polder area, on Sunday.
The man had murdered his father while still in his teens, then escaped from prison twice and whilst on the lam; he committed a number of atrocities including robbery with violence.
Two-time prison escapee and murder accused, Vinood Gopaul, who was also wanted for robbery under arms, possession of arms and ammunition among other misdemeanors has been on the run since 2011. Gopaul who was 19 at the time of 34 Yakasari, Black Bush Polder, was on remand for murdering his father. He was among 18 prisoners who escaped from the New Amsterdam Prison in August 2007. He was recaptured not long after on the East Bank of Berbice.
The man however managed to escape again in 2011 when he was among four prisoners who flee the New Amsterdam prison in June 2011.
He was also wanted for the robbery committed on a Black Bush Couple Baijnauth Niwaz, 58, and his wife Kalawattie Niwaz on Tuesday April 22. It is alleged that Gopaul and his brother, Krisendat Seeram, called ‘Apple Boy’, 22, of Lot 34 North Black Bush Polder allegedly robbed the couple of $1.7M at their home at Yakusari North, Black Bush Polder.
The couple was beaten. The police later found an improvised shot gun not too far from the robbery scene. Seeram was caught and is in prison.
The police, after intense investigation, got word that Gopaul would frequent his home and whenever the police raided the area he would flee into the backlands. A few nights ago he was at a wake. Many people on seeing him left and went away. By the time the cops arrived he had disappeared.
Investigators got word of the man’s movements and on Sunday they were able to set up a dragnet at the man’s home at Yakusari Black Bush polder.
After he saw the cops he made an attempt to escape by fleeing into the backlands but ended up running into a police dragnet.
His brother was held in a similar operation few weeks ago. The cops on that occasion raided two houses in the Yakusari area where the men were said to be hiding. However, by the time the cops arrived the men had hurriedly left the building having been tipped off.
The police had searched the area and nabbed Seeram hiding in some bushes, but Gopaul had managed to escape. The police also held two other brothers and an uncle. The police also found three cell phones during the raid.
During the 2011 escape, the men who were both convicted and remand prisoners, broke out from their cells at about 02:30 hrs. They used a sling (Cement sling) to scale down the side of the wall before ripping a hole in the fence and making good their escape. That escape was captured on camera. The sling it was revealed was taken into the prison a few days before the escape and was given to one of the escapees.
Among those that escaped along with Gopaul were Kevin Narine, called ‘Ram Sookdial or Long Hair’. Narine was one of Guyana’s most notorious high seas pirates.
Another escapee was Rickford La Fleur, 36, called Rickford Williams or Rickford Sabola, Bragga or Rastaman who was on remand on two charges of murder and two charges of trafficking in narcotics. He remains on the run.
The other was Vijay Seenarine who was on remand for carnal knowledge. He has since been recaptured.
