California Strike of the Mohammed Shariff Racing Stable and ridden by Colin Ross struck its opponents hard, returning to winning ways to take the feature D class event and the coveted $400,000 winner’s prize and the Vibert trophy for a
gate to pole win. The occasion was the Kennard’s Memorial Turf Club annual Pre Independence one day horserace meet which was held on Sunday last at the Club’s Bush Lot Farm entity.
The animals were off to a good start in the one mile event with California Strike, classified D1 and running with a top weight of 126 pounds, striking the lead early as the others played catch up. Along the back stretch and the battle was on as the momentum picked up with the horses hitting top speed.
Into the home stretch the challenge was still on, but Ross atop California Strike called on his charge and it responded for the easy win to spark celebrations among the Shariff entourage. Run Nana Run ran in second ahead of Monsoon and Red Cloud.
However, despite California Strike winning the feature event, the top horse on show was Famous Pride of the C Washington Stable of Cottage Mahaicony with two wins for the day in capturing the J1 and lower event and the J3 and lower handicap races.
Trained by Kelvin Gingoree, the animal ridden by new boy Russell Chichester first took care of business in the J3 and lower 5 furlongs event as it won the $150,000 first prize ahead of Sugar Boy, Road is Mine and Princess Stallion. It then returned with Chichester again in a blistering finish to take care of business in the J3 handicap race to take home the $150,000 first prize over 6 furlongs from Road is Mine, Speed Vision and Princess Stallion.
Work Force of the Vibert stable and ridden by Paul Delph returned to track after a lengthy lay off to take the $300,000 winners money and trophy in the G1 and lower 6 furlong race. Occupying the other positions were Monsoon, Another Jet and Flying Baby.
The I1 and Lower 7 furlong race saw jockey Winston Appadhu piloting Savion of The Crawford stable to victory ahead of Mary Ann, Party Time and Royal Cash. The winner collected $250,000 and trophy.
Party Time of the Parmanand stable with Rad Drepaul on board won the J1 and lower 6 furlongs race from Smarty Light, Little and Lady Secret. It took away the $200,000 and trophy up for grabs.
Apprentice Jockey Russell Chichester in his first major outing was adjudged the top jockey with Paul Delph the runner up. The Washington Stable with its two wins ran away with the top stable award. They were presented with accolades compliments of Ramesh Sunich of the Trophy Stall, Bourda Market and the organizers.
The day’s events were incident free and chief organizer, Retired Chancellor, Justice Cecil Kennard expressed thanks to all for their wonderful and unstinted support. Close to $4 M were at stake while over 60 horses took part in the day’s activities.
