Robert Luke, a resident of Bamboo Creek, North Rupununi faced Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court, yesterday, charged for the murder of his childhood friend, ‘Winnie’ Roberts.
He was not required to plead to the indictable charge, which alleged that on May 12, at Bamboo Creek Settlement, North Pakaraima, Rupununi, he murdered ‘Winnie’ Roberts.
Police Prosecutor, Bharat Mangru, told the Court that on the day in question, the accused and his brother, Benn Luke, were imbibing with Wilkey Peters, when a misunderstanding developed in relation to attending a party.
A fight broke out and the two brothers assaulted Peters but he managed to escape.
Peters returned with his brothers, Winnie Roberts and Glenford Edwin, who confronted Luke. The accused took a knife and allegedly stabbed the man to his left side chest. Roberts collapsed and succumbed to injuries moments after the fight.
Yesterday, Luke was remanded to prison until June 2. The matter is expected to come up before a different Magistrate at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court.
