Despite the proliferation of doctors in the health system, persons continue to die and the situation points to carelessness. A young mother is now dead and relatives are screaming negligence on the part of the authorities of the State of the Art New Amsterdam Hospital.
Relatives are now calling on the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Marissa Lagadue, a 24-year-old mother of two.
The woman, a hair dresser of Lot 41 Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, who was the mother of a four-year- old boy, died at the New Amsterdam hospital yesterday, two days after she had given birth to a bouncing seven- month-old baby boy. The child survived.
The relatives are saying that the young woman’s death is directly due to negligence and are putting the blame squarely on the feet of the authorities of the hospital. After giving birth she was given two units of blood on Friday evening and was discharged on Sunday around 13:00 hrs, which according to relatives was too soon after she was given the blood.
According to her aunt, Candace Stuart, her niece was healthy and strong. She attended clinic on a regular basis. Friday, last, was supposed to be another clinic day for the seven-month pregnant woman. She complained of pain in the back and was advised by relatives to visit the hospital instead of the clinic.
At the hospital the woman was admitted around 09:00 hrs and relatives took her things to the hospital for her delivery. She reportedly delivered the baby around 19:30 hrs.
Everything was normal, but the woman needed blood. Even as relatives made arrangements to donate the blood she was given two units from the hospital’s blood bank.
What was strange however was that just after receiving the blood the woman was told that she was alright and would be discharged. Her feet were swollen so relatives question why she was being discharged so early.
The baby was discharged on Saturday, but the mother remained in hospital. Her feet were still swollen and her pressure was high, but surprisingly she was discharged around 13:30 hrs on Sunday.
According to Candace, around 01:30 hrs yesterday her niece was at home with the two children when she heard some sounds. She called out to Marissa and enquired what was wrong. She decided to check on her niece and found her panting for breadth. She immediately prepared and rushed her to the hospital. She said that Marissa was still strong and walked into the Emergency Unit.
There they explained the circumstances. The doctor on duty expressed surprise that the woman was discharged from hospital so soon after being given blood (on Friday and discharged on Sunday).
At the Emergency Unit her condition worsened. More doctors were sent for and Marissa was administered saline and oxygen. Despite their best efforts the woman succumb around 04:00 hrs a mere three hours after.
She is survived by her three brothers and two sisters. She was described as a quiet likable person who always wanted to make peace. Loving and soft spoken.
Efforts to contact the relevant authorities did not reveal much since they stated that an investigation has to be done. Relatives are bent on getting justice since they see Marissa’s death as a case of high class negligence.
The child’s father is overseas and is expected in the country shortly. He has given indication of getting to the bottom of the issue which is another sorry tale of neglect in declining health services.
