Play in the fifth edition of the annual Trinidad and Guyana Sports Club and Outreach Programme (TGSCOP) U13 Inter Secondary School football competition for schools in the NA/ Canje district began last week Monday with one game and continued during the week. The tournament, which is being held at the All Saints Scott Church ground in New Amsterdam, is being played in collaboration with the Hearts of Oak Masters Football club.
The tournament started with a shocker with Berbice Educational Institute (BEI) hammering Berbice High School 11-0 in a lopsided contest. Scoring for BEI were Troy Munroe, Dwaine Alleyne and Neil Humphrey with three each, while Shaquan Durant and Avion Kendall netted one a piece.
In another game played on Tuesday, BHS bounced back to edge past Canje Secondary School (CSS) 2-1. Scoring for BHS were Edron Stephens and Rawle Bourne while Alade Conway scored for CSS.
In the second game of the double header, Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS) whipped New Amsterdam Multilateral School (NAMS) 6-0 with Drevaun Pyle and Alex Ogleton scoring two each, while Osafo McDonald and Dexter Williams scored one apiece.
Eight schools are slated to take part in the tournament with the others being Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS), School of The Nations (SOTN) and for the first time Fort Ordnance from East Canje.
The top school in the competition will be presented with the Trinidad and Guyana (T&G) Sports Club and Outreach Programme trophy and 15 gold medals while the runner up will collect a trophy and 15 silver medals. Trophies and other incentives will also be given to the other participating teams.
A number of individual prizes will also be presented including the Most Valuable Player, best striker, best defender, best midfielder, best goalkeeper, most promising player(s), and most goal scorer. Players will also be presented with jerseys, trunks, shin pads, hoses, boots and balls among other things.
The competition is sponsored by Isaac Daniel, a resident of Trinidad and a regular visitor to Guyana who started to organize activities some 10 years ago. President of TGSCOP is June Britton.
