DEAR EDITOR,
I am daily trying to come to grips with the seemingly obvious, while racking my cranium in an endeavour to firstly visualize my Guyana Eldorado, my native land, where a sound mind in a sound body (mens sana in corpore sano) and a sense of civic duty was once the norm, and at the selfsame time wondering what genre of the human species currently occupies the land.
I refer to the article of Friday May, 16, 2014 captioned “Man fights for life after vicious hacking”.
The more I read about the dastardly act that was perpetrated, the more it highlighted the apathy bordering on sheer stupidity of some of the locals. According to the newspaper report, the victim was attacked when he refused to get up and take his attackers to the urinal. A strange request in itself, as from all evidence they were capable of walking to the urinal, and carrying out unassisted, all requirements for the act that takes place when man, genital and urinal meet.
The victim was drinking, and the eyewitness who requested anonymity was able to give a very detailed description of the attack. He should remain anonymous in view of his pusillanimous behaviour. Was he also one of the imbibers? The report does not state, nor does it give any account of anyone confronting the attackers during the onslaught.
Was he just a fearful bystander, a recorder of sorts? No mention is made of what helpful part he played beyond his reporting ability and expressed anonymity. Did he not fear for his own life? So why stick around to see when there is a clear need to flee? Two of the assailants held the victim on the ground, while they cut off his nose, later throwing it on the ground. The nose is made of cartilage and despite its short size takes some time and effort to effect removal.
I am pleading for help in ascertaining or at best figuring out, what were the others doing while the surgery was taking place. Where was the owner for the home where the attack took place? What was he doing or saying while intruders were brutally assaulting someone on his property?
The men took out knives and started stabbing the security guard, and no one was able to intervene. Again the enigmatic question is posed — Why Not?
There were four assailants, so let‘s get more to overcome the four. They even held him up when he fell, in order to continue the carnage. One of the assailants threw a brick at the wife; the very selfsame object could have been used to throw at the assailants during the attack.
Confessedly even to the most moronic or myopic, there is something more than meets the eye. I mean far beyond the absence of Good Samaritan display, and carrying out of duty to rescue. Res ipsa loquitur (the thing speaks for itself).
The police are looking for the suspects, but should also painstakingly look at other aspects. If a watch for our brothers we must keep, then we cannot afford to sleep. Let us restore civic pride.
Yvonne Sam
