Security personnel at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) may have had their hands filled when a United States citizen allegedly posing a security risk, went into a violent tantrum last Saturday after being denied access to an outing Caribbean Airlines flight.
According to information reaching this publication, during the check-in process for the early morning flight to the United States, the woman, identified as Sharon Garnette Mason was found not to be mentally stable to board the plane and was denied access to the aircraft.
It is alleged that the woman behaved violently and gave great resistance when airport security tried to restrain her. While Kaieteur News understands that the woman was violent with the security personnel, it is alleged that they became equally aggressive. The publication was told that several officers converged on the scene to restrain the woman.
However, Mason is no stranger to security run-ins, since in 2012, she appeared before former Magistrate Hazel Octave- Hamilton to answer charges of assaulting a peace officer, disorderly behaviour and resisting arrest. The woman was placed on $50,000 bail after it was alleged that she acted in a rowdy manner in the vicinity of the local US Embassy when she went to collect her disability compensation.
The matter was given great publicity when operatives of a television newscast happened to be in the area at the time and caught the whole episode on camera. They filmed the handling of the woman by the security personnel from the Embassy which was said to be harsh.
Mason was said to be a military veteran with ties to Guyana. During her court appearance, Mason was very emotional when she pleaded not guilty to the charges. The Magistrate had ordered a mental evaluation for the woman.
