– Victoria Church Yard also in winners’ row
Part of the action in the East Coast Demerara segment of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition at the Haslington Market Square.
Defending champions Plaisance made a positive start to the defence of their title after registering a slim 1-0 win over a stubborn Nabaclis unit as play in the East Coast Demerara segment of the Banks DIH-sponsored Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ Futsal Competition opened on Saturday evening, at the Haslington Market Square.
Last year’s hero Warren Gilkes was again to the team’s rescue as he blasted in the winner in the fourth minute of the first period, before a large crowd.
The reigning title holders had to survive some anxious moments deep in the final period after Nabaclis staged a few threatening incursions, before the final whistle sounded.
In the game that followed, Plaisance ‘B’ were unable to duplicate the performance by their village counterparts as they succumbed to Beterverwagting ‘B’ 0-2.
Edun Fraser was the sublime form as he fired in a brace in the 12th and 19th minutes of play.
The third game of the night saw Melanie Damishana ‘B’ advancing via a penalty shootout against Buxton ‘A’, prevailing 2-1.
Melanie ‘A’ then joined their ‘B’ unit after gaining a walkover from Mahaica, who failed to make an appearance on the court.
In the fifth game, last year’s beaten finalist Victoria Church Yard scored an impressive 2-0 triumph over Vryhied’s Lust with Keyron Johnson and Nicholas Holder netting in the 9th and 17th minutes respectively.
Kwame Alfred’s 7th minute missile was enough to hand Paradise a 1-0 victory over Ann’s Grove Punters, before BV ‘A’ benefitted from a walkover from Ann’s Grove Young Warriors.
In the final game of the night, Victoria Eagles soared to a nail-biting 4-3 win on sudden death penalty kicks over Golden Grove Superstars.
Regulation time had ended in a 1-1 stalemate with Kirk Warren netting in the 15th minute for the Eagles, before Michael Evans responded in the 24th minute for the Superstars to send the contest into penalty shootout.
