The Guyana Squash Association (GSA), in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel Guyana, held the final day of its 2014 National Junior Squash Championships sponsored by Woodpecker Products Ltd at the Georgetown Club concluded yesterday with the finals.
Several exciting matches were witnessed as most of the top players were vying to be crowned National Champions for 2014.
The highlight of the day was the Boys Under-19 clash between Nyron Joseph and Ben Mekdeci. Ben had earlier won the Under-17 title but was seeking to also win the Under-19 crown. Nyron was quickly into his stride and was up 5- 2 but Ben then evened the score at 5. Nyron then won the next five points and moved to 10 – 5 game ball. However, Ben won the next four points to get as close as nine but then Nyron was able to take the next point and the first game 11 – 9.
Ben seemed to come out with more energy in the second game and was soon up 6 – 2 and then 8 – 3. Nyron could only get as close as 6 before Ben won the second game 11 – 6. Nyron seemed to be getting tired and Ben was quickly up 8 – 4, Nyron got to seven then Ben won the next two points to get to 10 – 7 game ball. Nyron got as close as 9 but Ben was able to win the third game 11 – 9.
However in the fourth game Nyron seemed to settle down and easily won the fourth game 11 – 3. The fifth game went back and forth but Ben was getting tired and started to go for winners but was making alot of errors. Nyron moved to a 4 – 1 lead and eventually got to 10 and even though Ben got to as close as 7, Nyron was able to win the game 11 -7 and the match 3 – 2.
The Boys Under-15 match-up between Shemane Griffith and Shomari Wiltshire, the only two unbeaten players in this category, lived up to expectations.
Shomari was up 6 – 3 before Shemane found his game and evened the score at 6 all and then went on to take the first game 11 – 8. In the second game Shemane moved to an early 9 – 3 lead. Shomari worked his way back into the game but could only get as close as 8 as Shemane again won the second game 11 – 8. Shemane seemed to step up a gear after going up two games to love and easily won the third game 11 – 3 to be crowned Boys Under-15 champion.
Rebecca Low took on Sarah Lewis in the final match in the Girls Under -15 category. Rebecca moved out to an early 5 – 1 lead but Sarah evened the score at 5 all. Rebecca moved to 8 then Sarah got to 7 but Rebecca was able to win the first game 11 – 8. Rebecca easily won the second game 11 – 3. The third game was close throughout but from 6 all Rebecca was able to move to 9 and then closed out the game 11 – 7 and took the match and the Girls Under-15 title.
Taylor Fernandes and Larissa Wiltshire renewed their rivalry in the Girls Under -17 final. Larissa won the first game 11 – 8 and then won an even closer second game 11 – 9. Larissa quickly moved out to a 7 – 2 lead in the third game and even though Taylor got to as close as 6 Larissa was able to secure a three game to nil match victory.
