A carefully constructed unbeaten 77 from Man-of-the-Match Taignarine Chanderpaul yesterday gave Demerara a four-wicket win against the President’s X1 in the final of the Guyana Cricket Board’s (GCB) under-19 inter-county 50-over tournament at Bourda.
In a final, watched by a handful of spectators and which lacked excitement and spark, President’s X1, led by 54 from Sunil Singh fell for 148 in 43 overs on a slow track before Chanderpaul, who batted 48.5 overs and faced 154 balls and Ronaldo Renee (28) added 77 in a second partnership as the host laboured to 150-4 to add the 50-over title to their three-day trophy.
Played in brilliant sunshine on a slightly heavy outfield, Chanderpaul, who hit four fours, two off the last two balls of the contest with nine runs required for victory from 12 balls, and Renee joined forces in the third over at 8-1 after National under-19 opener Brian Sattaur (7) played a reckless swipe, high to mid-on off pacer Gavin Moriah.
The pair made free scoring a most difficult task in a partnership as exciting as watching paint dry as they took 20 overs to post the 50.
There were intermittent flashes of brilliance with Renee hooking pacer Ronaldo Mohamed for four and Chanderpaul smashing spinner Damian Waldron for an exquisite four after elegantly caressing Moriah to the boundary.
Renee was bowled by Ryan Shun after batting 57 balls to leave the score on 85-2 in the 28th over and Demerara lost two more wickets as they struggled to score freely. But Chanderpaul, a first-class left-hander, timed the run chase to perfection and after taking 118 balls for his 50, and achieved victory for his team with successive boundaries off Mohamed with seven balls to spare.
Earlier, President’s X1 lost Shun (1) with two runs on the board before Singh and Waldron (23) took the score to 53 when Waldron was trapped LBW. Mohamed chipped in with 23 before he was bowled by leg-spinner Steven Sankar at 98-4 after Chanderpaul, bowling left-arm spin, had Nick Ramsaroop (1) stumped.
Sankar, Cleon McEwan and Michael Hubbard each took two wickets for the Champions but the batsmen on both teams struggled to score in an atmosphere that was as depressing as the present state of Guyana’s cricket.
