Linden’s men and women scored resounding wins as they halted Georgetown when the Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation’s Inter Association Basketball championships got underway Saturday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court, Linden.
As the crowds flocked the arena the Linden, teams made good use of the home court to their advantage and the first game saw the women scoring a fine 59-44 win against their taller Georgetown opponents with their speed and the males cruising to a 58-50 win after taking control throughout the different periods of the game.
Of note is that defence off the ball is the most challenging and crucial aspect playing basketball and the Linden teams executed this well, and this proved the undoing of their City opponents.
The women’s match-up began well for Linden who shot themselves into a 12-0 lead before Georgetown could answer; and with Tamika Hunter and Shakeila Sampson pushing the ball up court they were able to get penetrations as Georgetown were slow on to the ball. Georgetown did respond and closed the gap as the first quarter ended 12-8 for Linden, but the second quarter still found the Lindeners in relative control by a 25-17 score-line.
Nichola Jacobs was the most experienced player for the Linden side and her counterpart Natasha Alder tried to bolster her players to counter the frenetic pace of the Linden girls to no avail. As Georgetown clawed back into the game they were able to reduce the lead but Linden females still held sway at the end of the third period 35-32.
However, the players from Linden increased the pressure and were able to out run their rivals from the City to coast to an eventual 59-44 win as Hunter finished with a game high 16 points, while Jacobs had 14 and Shakeila Sampson 13. For Georgetown Georgina Ifill had a top score of 13, Alder, who buried two from outside, contributed 12 and I. Joseph and Laquanta Gibson seven in a losing effort.
The second game on the night began with the Linden men recovering from a 4-0 advantage to Georgetown and taking the lead 7-6, as sharp shooting guard/forward Chris Williams shot from outside three point territory to score, which was followed by another bomb and then a power penetration drive inside from Dwayne Roberts to finish the first quarter leading 17-11.
As the second quarter got underway, Williams and then Orin Rose with one from 3-points territory, gave the home side a 24-16 lead and even Shelroy Thomas’ shot from beyond the arc which allowed Georgetown to be within a point of their rivals 23-24, was negated by the excellent team rotation of Linden who shrugged off the response to rally and remain in the lead 31-24 at the lemon time.
Dave Causeway started Georgetown’s mission to tie things up in this pivotal third quarter as he connected with a 3-point shot to start play and when Ryan Stephaney was there for a ‘put-in’ of a missed attempt from a teammate, they trailed 35-41, and when a relatively quiet Akeem ‘The Dream’ Kanhai slipped through for a play-in the Georgetown boys had crept back to within a basket 39-41. But forward Dwayne Roberts and Rose gave the Linden side the confidence they needed and by the end of the third period, they had opened the lead to ten, leading 49-39 going into the final period.
When deadly shooter Williams hit another from beyond the arc making it 55-43 with 5:01 to go it seemed some really poor finishing by Linden team and aggressive transition plays from Georgetown would have to be made for Linden to be denied that win. In the end the Linden men ran out winners as Rose knocked in another from outside and the game finished with a sweep for the home team winning 58-50.
With a good team effort, Williams with three from beyond the arc had 13 points, Roberts scored 12, Rose added 11 and Shane Webster 10 for Linden. Surprisingly, none of the Georgetown players hit double figures with Kanhai, often the destroyer of opposing teams never got going, getting nine, while centre Jermaine Slater and guard Travis Burnett both with eight being the other recognisable scorers.
