Police on the East Coast of Demerara believe that they are moving closer to cracking a major carjacking ring following the discovery of a stripped Toyota Premio motor car in the Nabaclis backlands, yesterday.
The discovery of the shell of the car comes in the wake of reports of carjackings on the East Coast of Demerara, which had left investigators stumped.
The latest report came in last week when a Mon Repos taxi driver claimed that he managed to jump from the window of his Toyota AT 192 carina after he was hijacked by three men.
The carjackers are targeting strictly Toyotas which from all indications have a ready market.
After weeks of painstaking investigations, including checks at bottom house auto body repair shops, police a received a tip on Friday that the shell of a car was in the backlands of Nabaclis, about seven miles from the main road.
They managed to locate what was a silver grey car, and using a tow truck, they brought it out to the Cove and John police station.
Except for the main engine block and front suspensions, the car was stripped of every other removable part.
Although no one has so far come forward to claim the vehicle’s remains, investigators will try to ascertain the owner from the chasis number on the shell.
Two Saturdays ago Cliff Johnson, 58, jumped through one of the windows of the Toyota Carina he was operating after feigning illness as the hijackers were driving him to a desolate area behind Enterprise, East Coast Demerara.
Johnson who was operating the taxi HB 5758 from the Mon Repos market tarmac was approached by three men who requested to be taken to the nearby village of Beterverwagting.
Two of the men sat in the back seat while the other took the front passenger seat.
Johnson did not get very far into the journey when one of the men at the back grabbed his neck from behind and hauled him out of his seat.
The bandit and his colleague who were at the back sat on him, stabbing him repeatedly which a semi-sharp object. The other bandit who was in front took the steering wheel and turned the car east and headed to the Coldingen Access Road, leading into the village of Enterprise.
The driver, suspecting that he was being taken along a desolate, bumpy road, played his trump card.
He told the bandits that he was feeling unwell and needed to vomit.
They in turn, not wanting to be soiled by vomit, allowed Johnson to put himself through the window, giving him the golden opportunity he was craving for.
The taxi driver told police that he threw himself from the window and landed on the rough road. He bolted as fast as he could, screaming for help. The bandits, meanwhile, drove away with the car which has not been seen since.
A reward is being offered to anyone who could provide information on its whereabouts.
They are asked to contact telephone numbers 662-3070, 610-9292, 256-3736 or the nearest police station.
