In what is believed to be an execution attempt, four gunmen around 02:55 hrs yesterday opened fire on a 26-year-old woman outside a house at Garnett Street, Campbellville leaving her in a critical condition at a city hospital.
The injured woman has been identified as Susan Da Silva also known as Melicia, of David Street, Subryanville.
She was shot to the left arm. She also sustained a gunshot wound to the back. The bullet is lodged in her spine.
Da Silva underwent emergency surgery early yesterday and is scheduled to do another one to remove the bullet from her spine.
Police in a press release said that at around 02:55 hrs Da Silva was in a car with other relatives outside a house at Garnett Street, Campbellville, when a motor car with four men drove up.
The release further added that two of the men who were armed with firearms exited the vehicle. As they were approaching, Da Silva attempted to drive away and the men opened fire at her after which they escaped.
A relative of the injured woman who asked for her name to be withheld said that Da Silva, who was taking her mother to the airport, stopped at a relative’s home to pick up two family members who were also leaving the country.
“Since she (Da Silva) left her home she noticed this car parked not far from where she lives. She drove off and noticed the parked car drove off too but the car then disappeared from her view. It appeared at the back of her when she stopped at Garnett Street.”
The woman added that when the 26-year-old noticed the car, she drove away from the house and the men discharged two rounds at her. She reportedly lost control and drove into a yard, breaking the fence and a step.
“When she drove into the yard, the shooters stopped in the middle of the road and the driver came out and another tall man and they fired about four shots at her and then they escape,” the relative explained.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital.
From all indications, Da Silva was the shooters’ target since three other persons were in the vehicle but none was injured.
The relative said she believes it was an execution attempt on the 26-year-old woman. No one offered a motive.
“Susan’s car left parked in the yard and the shooters didn’t take anything. They just came out of the vehicle and fired four shots and drove away,” the relative said.
Da Silva’s family was attacked by gunmen four times before.
Last year, gunmen took away a firearm belonging to her father, Franciso Da Silva, who operates a stall at the Stabroek Market.
Meanwhile, a senior police source told Kaieteur New that it seems as though the shooting was an inside job.
“How did the shooters know that they (Da Silva) will be leaving to go to the airport? How did they know what time they (Da Silva) will leave? This is an inside job. It is a set up,” a senior police source stressed.
He is calling on businessmen to be more security conscious and to be careful when divulging information.
Investigations are ongoing.
