The Guyana Squash Association (GSA), in collaboration with its corporate sponsor Digicel Guyana, held night-three of its 2014 National Junior Squash Championships sponsored by Woodpecker Products Ltd. at the Georgetown Club on
Thursday evening last.
Matches are being contested in eleven age group categories and keen competition between players was again evidenced on Thursday night.
Makeda Harding showed that her victory over Sarah Lewis in the Kraft Skilled level tournament was no fluke as she was again victorious but this time she had to go the full distance to secure the win. Harding won the first game 11 – 7 but Sarah rallied to win the second 11 – 6 and then the third 11 – 7. The fourth game could have gone either way but Harding scraped through winning 11 – 8 then closed out the match with an 11 – 7 win in the fifth.
Taylor Fernandes secured two wins in the girls Under 17 category, first taking care of Rebecca Low scores being 11 – 9, 11 – 1, 11 – 3 and then shortly after beating Savannah Mendes 11 – 2, 11 – 2, 11 – 3.
Anthony Islam suffered mixed fortunes during the evening as he defeated Gianni Carpenter 11 – 3, 11 – 5, 11 – 0 in the Boys Under 13 category but lost to Alex Cheeks in a very competitive match 3 – 11, 11 – 5, 3 – 11, 4 – 11 in the Boys Under 15 category.
