Berbice snatched victory from the jaws of defeat against the President’s XI in the final preliminary round game of the Guyana Cricket Board Inter County Under-19 50 overs tournament yesterday at the Everest Cricket Club.
In a game which was reduced to 42 overs, the President’s X1were set 120 for victory and were cruising at 96-2 after 34 overs before a spirited effort from the Berbice spinners, led by man-of-the-match Arif Chan (3-15) and Balchan Baldeo (3-22) handed them a three-run win.
After the President’s XI lost opener Sunil Singh (04) with the score at 15, Ryan Shun and Avishkar Sewkarran steadied the chase with a second wicket stand of 81. The pair started cautiously, rotating the strike at will to ensure the asking rate was on par.
Shun square drove pacer Niall Smith for four and stroked him for a couple forcing skipper Sharaz Ramcharran to turn to an all spin attack. Shun caressed left arm spinner Parmanand Ramdhan for boundaries while Sewkarran swept leg spinner Viendra Gooniah to square leg, but just as when it seemed that the President’s XI would reach home without much hiccups, Ramcharran decided to change his bowlers around, the strategy paid dividends.
Off-spinner Baldeo dragged Sawkarran out of his ground and wicketkeeper Hackeem Hinds made no mistake, he departed for 27 (1×4). Shun was then caught and bowled by Gooniah for 40 which came off 103 balls and contained four fours, leaving the score at 100-3.
Nick Ramsaroop (04) drove Baldeo to long off boundary before he was caught and bowled by the said bowler at 107-4 with 13 runs required from three overs. Chan had Damion Waldron (00) taken at the wicket two runs later before accounting for Kelvin Sewpersaud (02); the score was 112-6.
The President’s XI needed seven runs from the final over bowled by Chan with four wickets in hand, but only managed four. Kareem Mentore (02) and Gavin Moriah (00) were the batsmen dismissed. Ramcharran and Gooniah had one wicket each.
Earlier, Berbice batted first after winning the toss and found themselves in trouble at 50-4. The top order was guilty of throwing their wickets away with reckless shots. Martin Singh (01) was the first to go bowled by Moriah with only two runs on the board.
Shimron Hetymer (07) was caught off Vivian Albert who also sent back Baldeo (18) and Ashkay Homraj (12) in quick succession. The Berbicians never really recovered losing wickets at regular intervals.
The lower order led by Ramdhan who top scored with 25 (3×4 1×6), Smith (17*) and Chan (12) propped up the total somewhat which proved to be a handful in the end. Albert captured 3-21 and Daniel Lewis 3-26.
