GCA’s Carib Beer T20 final set for Eve Leary tomorrow …
By Sean Devers
The battle lines will be drawn tomorrow from 13:00hrs when Police face-off with GCC in what is anticipated to be a pulsating final of the Georgetown Cricket Association’s (GCA) Carib Beer first-division T20 cricket tournament at the Police
Sports Club ground, Eve Leary.
While GCC is one of the leading sides in Guyana in recent times and has been involved in several division-one finals, this is a massive game for Police who will want to avenge their only loss in the preliminary rounds when they were beaten by GCC, who will enter tomorrow’s grand finale with a hundred percent record.
In the early 1980s Police dominated first division cricket with players the caliber of Hubert Carrington, Jeff Jones, Leonard McRae, Joseph Simpson, Lloyd Harper, Collie Solomon, Milton Pydanna, Anthony Rigby, Eddy Nichols, Keith Cameron, Calvin Burnette and the late William Jeffery.
But since the 1980s when they last qualified for the National Bristol Cup final, the lawmen have not reached a first division final. Yesterday in the scorching sun, the Cops were hard at practice at the match venue.
Police Skipper 24-year-old Royan Fredricks was confident at the official launch of the final yesterday at Eve Leary which was also attended by GCC Captain 25-year-old Robin Bacchus.
“Police cricket has grown in recent times with more emphasis placed on the sport now and we are looking forward to an exciting final with GCC, the only team to beat us in this competition,” Fredricks, who represented Guyana at the Under-19 level in 2008, disclosed.
The winner will take home a Trophy and $110, 000 while the runner up will collect $60, 000. There will be trophies and medals for the leading batsmen, bowlers, fielders and MVPs from the two zones in the preliminary rounds while the man-of-match, batsman with the highest score, bowler with the most wickets and fielder who effected the most dismissals in the Final will also receive trophies and medals.
DCC were dethroned when a hyped up Police unit whipped them in the own back yard at DCC to qualify for the tomorrow’s game and a large partisan crowd is expected to create a fantastic atmosphere at Eve Leary.
But Bacchus, a former National youth and senior player, who has recently been selected for the Guyana Amazon Warriors for the 2014 CPL tournament, said his team was not going to underestimate Police because of their win in the preliminaries.
“We could still have Leon (Johnson) since he is seeking permission to return home for the final. But even without our Test players we have a strong team and usually play as a unit for our club and we are confident even though Police cricket has come a long way in a short time,” Bacchus said.
Police support will come from Fredricks, the Benn brothers (Troy and Trevor) Rawle Browne,
Yatesh Dhanpaul, Jason Heyliger, Ricardo Adams, Rawle Haynes, Seon Daniels, Randy Knights, Kelvin Letch, Jermaine Reynolds, Pernill London and Stephon Blacks.
The hyper active Trevor Benn in particular, could easily get into the ‘heads’ of batsmen, especially if Johnson does not play tomorrow and the pitch is a fast one. The entertaining Bacchus could lead the GCC batting since talented teenager Renaldo Mohamed could be unavailable due to Under-19 Inter-County duties.
GCC’s team will come from Bacchus, Martin Pestano-Bell, Elon Fernandes, Gavin Singh, Devon Lorde, Joshua Wade, Cleyon Critchlow, Chidanand Shivram, Royston Alkins, Jamal Anderson, Tyree Glasgow, Samuel McKenzie, Dellon Fernandes and Leon Johnson.
