– will provide live streaming options
In its efforts to have the public updated on the work of the National Assembly, the Parliament Office has developed a new website which will offer live streaming of parliamentary sittings. The website is expected to be made public in about six weeks. Parliamentarians from both sides of the House were briefed on the ICT updates of the Parliament, prior to start of the Parliamentary sitting
yesterday.
The site which has been created by Cyrus Multimedia will provide information from yesterday’s sitting of the National Assembly to as far back as possible. However, this will take some time because this information would have to be gathered manually and then be fed into the electronic system.
It will consist of reports, notice papers, search engine, simplified content management, along with many other features.
Information Technology Consultant of Cyrus Multimedia, Christopher Lawrence noted that the programme was originally designed to revamp the old website, however due to several reasons it was decided that the team will construct an entirely new one.
The project was designed to run for six months after which technical support will be offered by the company for one year. It also comprises a capacity-building aspect which will see staff of the Parliamentary office being trained in basic Information Technology skills that will be needed to maintain the site. This training is currently ongoing.
Lawrence added that the site is designed in such a way that there is minimum need for maintenance, however there is need for a web master, and efforts have been made in this regard. He also noted that the involvement of stakeholders in very critical in this project.
The Project is supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Canadian Government.
Speaker of the House, Raphael Trotman noted that this project will bring the parliament closer to the people. He added that this project has three phases; development of the site, live streaming and the placement of tools in the hands of the Members of Parliament (MP).
Dr. Nicole Giles, Canadian High Commissioner to Guyana, said that the Canadian Government was very pleased to support this initiative. She added that this undertaking will allow all Guyanese and those in the Diaspora to have equal access to information about their country, and the decision-making that may influence their lives in one way or another.
UNDP’s Deputy Resident Representative, Chisa Mikami, noted that the organisation was proud to be a part of the initiative which commenced in October 2013.
The UNDP donated 15 Samsung Galaxy tablets to members of the National Assembly.
