Former Marketing Director of Courts Guyana, Molly Hassan, is reportedly set to take over the helm of state-owned National Communications Network (NCN).
NCN, which manages the state’s network of radio and television stations, has been facing flak by the Opposition which accused it of biased coverage overtime.
Hassan’s groundings in marketing may have been the tilting factor for her hiring, NCN officials confirmed yesterday.
Government is yet to make an official announcement.
Hassan would be taking over from former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Acting, Michael Gordon, who earlier this year was appointed the General Manager of the Guyana Chronicle, the state-owned newspaper.
Raymond Azeez, NCN’s Marketing Manager, has been in charge of the entity since Gordon’s departure.
NCN came in for sharp scrutiny in 2012 when it was discovered that a senior officer collected almost $4M and placed it in his bank account. The monies were paid over by the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company which had hired NCN to help produce a popular singing competition.
The officer, Martin Goolsarran was suspended while CEO Mohamed Sattaur resigned. An audit into GT&T and conducted by a private accounting firm found alarming breaches.
NCN’s Board of Directors later ordered a wider assessment.
The administration has refused to release that report which was given to President Donald Ramotar.
The Opposition, upset over NCN’s operations, has since 2012 been refusing to approve Government subsidies to that agency, demanding that widespread changes be made first.
