A differently-able woman has been rendered homeless after an early morning fire yesterday.
Chandradai Ragnauth, 57, who is a deaf-mute, lived alone at Lot 26 Cromarty Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The woman’s next door neighbour, Latchmee Ashardat, said she was at home with her family around 00:30 hrs yesterday when they were startled by crackling sounds. Shortly after they saw a bright light and felt terrible heat and soon realized that their neighbour’s house was on fire.
The woman was not at home at the time, as she had gone to spend the night by another villager who had come in from overseas.
The woman’s modest 14 ft. by 9 ft. two-bedroom wooden home, with the kitchen downstairs, was completely destroyed. The home, which was built with the help of residents and the religious organizations in the area, had the basic amenities.
A unit from the Guyana Fire Service’s Rose Hall location arrived on the scene within 25 minutes of being summoned.
Residents are calling for more stations to be established on the Corentyne because of the distance. Although they had words of commendation for the work of the firemen, by the time the unit arrived everything was burnt. They however managed to save nearby houses, one of which was scorched.
The woman who is staying by friends in the village is appealing to the general public for assistance. An account has been opened at the NBS. That number is C901836 or persons can call 6157627.
