Sultriness and an unexpected touch of fantasy and creativity were the qualities aptly displayed by the mothers and daughters who were beautifully adorned in spectacular locally designed gowns as they competed in the 2014 Mother and Daughter pageant on Saturday last in the “warm halls” of the National Cultural Centre.
Held under the rubric, “Love that glitters is gold,” the 23rd production for the Super Stylistic team saw the crowning of new queens and princesses who competed in the Junior, Middle and Senior Categories of the pageant, before a packed and vocal audience.
The junior category was simply an adorable round as little princesses modeled across the stage with confidence and flare to one of Rihanna’s grooviest tunes, “Who’s that Chick.” This segment which was sponsored by Igloo Ice cream and Sterling Products Limited, saw stiff competition but Renatha Exeter and her daughter Azalyah emerged as the winners.
The Middle category, proudly sponsored by Courts Furniture Store was one which saw extreme creativity. Winning this round were Sandra Johnson and Nokasy. The Crowd was of course pleased with this decision as patrons applauded and shouted, “Yes, they deserve it.” The mother and daughter were adorned in a matching tie-dyed outfit. The duo exhibited synchronicity and a cheerful grace as they shared gentle hugs and kisses as a genuine reflection of their love. Miss Johnson, before leaving, approached the front of the stage and opened her pink and shimmering lace bag and released from it several beautiful butterflies before the audience. It was a creative move and an enchanting moment, representative of the bond shared between mom and daughter and shared with the audience.
At this point there was an intermission during which representatives of the Fly Jamaica Airways gave away a ticket to any of their destination points: Toronto, Jamaica or New York to a lucky member of the audience. Another member of the audience also won a Blackberry cellular phone from the Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company Inc. and another won a day at the spa.
Up next was the highly anticipated senior category. The seven pairs of mothers and daughters were introduced to the audience for about two minutes as they teased with their graceful movements to one of Beyonce’s latest tracks, “XO.” This round had much to offer but was not without its hiccups as nervousness and lack of coordination by some pairs proved to be their disadvantage irrespective of their gorgeous and creative outfits.
Some couples appeared stiffened by nervousness as they modeled across the stage. This caused one patron to shout out, “Like they eat starch for Mother’s Day.”
However, the one couple that hypnotized the crowd was Felicia Geness and her daughter Katusha.
Felicia wore a gorgeous body fitted black and silver dress with a plunging “V” neckline. When Geness turned around, her curvaceous anatomy was seen from a jaw-dropping view as the backless dress was veiled by black lace. This sent the crowd into frenzy.
However, some patrons said that since the judges were awarding points for appropriateness, her dress they opined would score low. But others said, with creole vernacular, “I like de woman style. She big but she still young and she body ready. If she ain’t win, something dead wrong.’
At the end of this segment the anxious audience was treated to a sterling musical performance by Calvin Burnett who copped the second place position in the GT&T Jingle and Song Competition several years ago, as they awaited the results.
The “queens and princesses” seemed captivated by the soulful entertainer as they couldn’t help but hug Burnette or in some cases share in a few dance moves with him as he presented each with a red rose.
Finally the results were presented.
Emerging in third place was Carmel Williams and Leah, who hailed from Linden. But the second position was handed over to the crowd’s favourite, Felicia Geness and her daughter. The audience expressed their disappointment, as they waited eagerly to see who copped the first position. Crowned queen and princess of the Senior Category were Badyawattie Dindyal and her daughter Latita. They wore elegant satin blue and white gowns embellished with white gems and sequins, a reflection of the night’s musky sky.
Members from various sections of the audience rose from their seats immediately, in demonstration of their disappointment. Some uttered, “Nah, nah something wrong. This is the same reason why I don’t like competition. It does nevah fair.”
However, other members said, “I agree, Geness didn’t deserve first place. She dress didn’t setting no example and plus is a mudda and daughter pageant, is nah Miss Jamzone.”
Throughout the evening, members of the audience complained bitterly about the deteriorating conditions of the National Cultural Centre, especially the poor air conditioning systems. The heat caused some to say, “Is best the National Cultural Centre turn into a sauna. Imagine the judges got two fans but the rest of the place so hot.”
