The achievements of several Guyanese women from 1955 to 2014 are now recorded in a magazine entitled “International Women’s Day”. The reference book was spearheaded by the Ministry of Human of Services and Social Security.

During an entertaining yet simple function held at the Guyana International Conference Centre on Saturday evening, the magazine was unveiled by Prime Minister Samuel Hinds, Mrs. Yvonne Hinds and Human Services Minister Jennifer Webster.
Webster enlightened that the magazine was supposed to be presented in time for International Women’s Day celebrations, which was observed in March but was met with some setbacks. However coincidental it may be, the magazine was completed in time for Mother’s Day.
Prior to the launching of the magazine, the Ministry honoured eight women for their contributions to Guyana’s development. They are Mrs. Patricia Benn, wife of the late Brindley Benn, CCH, and mother of Public Works Minister Robeson Benn; Members of Parliament Gail Teixeira and Indranie Chandarpal; Permanent Secretary Lorene Baird; Head of the Ministry’s Document Centre Yvonne Stephenson; Director of Child Care Protection Agency Ann Greene; Head of the Women’s Affairs Bureau Lydia Greene.
Maud McAllister, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday was also recognized by the Ministry.
According to Webster, the awardees, who are all mothers, have contributed to Guyana’s development in a significant way. She noted that they are ordinary women with extraordinary attributes, including courage and intelligence.
Webster emphasized there still needs to be more women represented on Boards in the Private Sector. However, Guyana has much to celebrate with women playing major roles in the decision making process of the country. In addition, women now have greater access to social services and economic opportunities.
