Dear Editor,
I read Mr. Seeram’s article on police barbarity in Guyana and do concur with every word he stated. I can sense his anger and I cannot blame him one bit, and the question is asked, why is the media not doing more, why are the Guyanese people looking on silently? It’s not your family now, but do be advised there will come a day when your family may be involved and then you will go through what this mother is experiencing.
What kind of administrators are running the Police Force? What kind of people are in charge of the Government of Guyana? How would these people feel if this terrible brutality were meted out to their children? When are the Guyanese people going to wake up and say enough is enough? Mr. Seeram was absolutely right with his list of the groups he condemned. When are you people going to wake up and say the police must be prosecuted when they commit crimes on the Guyanese people, the very people they took an oath to serve and protect?
To the Minister of Home Affairs, to the Police Commissioner, you are in charge. Why is the cadet officer not under close arrest with charges pending? He placed the gun in the kid’s mouth, he pulled the trigger and discharged the weapon, causing extensive injuries to the juvenile. Mr. Commissioner, as a former police officer of Indian descent, I was very happy when you received your promotion, I said more power to you.
Sir, Law Enforcement schools for public administrators teach that the reflection of one’s organization starts at the top, all the way down to the bottom. When the subordinates feel that they will not be disciplined, then they are not afraid to commit crimes.
Yes, being poor can be a bitch in poor third world countries, but in Democratic countries the poor and the rich get the same justice when they break the law, worse yet, if it’s the police officer breaking the law. Mr. Commissioner you are at the helm of your ship, that being the police force, you can still turn it around. Make positive changes, get rid of the bad apples, be a strong disciplinarian.
Jagmohan
